Yep.
This game is far more tactical than SPAZ. It's all focused on combat the moment, but it's not nearly as repetitive/grindy-feeling as SPAZ is.
A lot of the missions are quite hard as well <_<

I 100% SUPPORT THIS!

I really love to support indie developers, but if a game isn't on Steam it really makes me hesitate to buy it.  There's something nice about having all your games in one spot, where a lot of your online friends can see.

I totally understand how it's not a guaranteed thing though.  I'm going to give you my money right now anyway.  If I have to and if the game is good enough, I'll just re-buy it on Steam. =P

Edit: Oh, and if you do end up releasing on Steam, make a promo TF2 hat.  That'll get you at least another 10k sales, for sure.
Edit2: And if you make a TF2 promo hat, give vintage qualities for alpha adopters. =)

Thank you! Yeah, no question that Steam is great. DRM done right and all that.

And re: hats... I love hats. It's like the funniest word, ever. So on that strength of that alone, that's a suggestion worth considering :)

Wow, the manual is quite handy. I'm definitely going to go back to some of the missions with a new perspective. I think one of my main issues is not really fully understanding the roles of all the ships and which enemy targets I should try to engage first. Bumping into the enemy carrier and getting swarmed by bombers doesn't seem like a great idea! I should probably stay away from the impossible mission for now..

I'm definitely getting the mechwarrior influence as well from the flux "overheating" and weapon groups and such.

Yeah, I also remember having had trouble with all missions except the first until I read the manual, which gave me much more info and handy tips to improve my gameplay skills. Nowadays I've beaten all but one (Dire Straits) of the single missions.

Have you considered gamestop (formerly impulse) for the people who hate steam?

Ok, I like were the game is heading (and I've pre-ordered), but I had to just register to at least say that your forum posters here have no idea what they are talking about.  I've had SPAZ on steam forever.  It was even one of the Christmas achievements.

To be fair, at the time of those posts, SPAZ wasn't on Steam, and there were rumors going around that they had trouble getting in. No idea if those rumors were true, ofc.

It's really a bit early to go all out in distributing the game. I'd like to get it out there to as many people as possible, when it's ready, but what exact shape that takes remains to be seen.

:P  The later ones still talk about it even after it was.

Steam is notoriously fickle about the indy games; their process is extremely opaque and there are a number of titles (eg SPAZ , Star Ruler) where the developers have had to make several attempts to get them onboard.

Often getting yourself onto Gamersgate (hell, they're selling the Alpha of Kenshi) and/or Impulse is enough, some people have gotten by by sending Gabe Newell and Doug Lombardi free copies.

The thing with steam is that they have very strict rules on how games are allowed to be placed in it.  They have a lot more security things and other requirements that others, like Impulse, don't have.  But, think about how many more people use steam then those.  I'm sure the game will have to be much closer to a full release state before steam would even consider it.  But, here's hoping that when it is they will put it up.

Sometimes those security things are more of a bane than a help. In any case, I'm not too sure about their security things being all that more impressive than its rivals, I recall a recent hacking into its servers and information stolen.

I personally think most people tends to buy from the cheapest source rather than through any sort of loyalty to distributors. Especially for a game like Starfarer where there isn't any multiplayer component, there's not much reason for people to look further into it if their friends are playing it.

Yeah, Steam denied an earlier release of SPAZ.  They weren't very helpful with feedback either - they said that its their policy not to discuss why a game was denied.  However, from what the developers said, it was more of a stability thing with the engine.  Something about Directdraw or something technical like that.

Oh you.  Anyway, I'm pretty sure the devs don't want to shoot themselves in the foot by not marketing their game to as many distributors as possible!  Except Origin.  Screw you, EA.

I understand what you're saying, but it would seem that the DRM-free approach should appeal to all potential customers who want to play the game, considering you aren't required to use any external software. Don't get me wrong, I'm super enthusiastic about my 178 (full-stop what) games on Steam because it's a fantastic service, but I'm generally happier giving indie devs with the no-DRM philosophy and -- say, GOG.com -- my money. I preordered SF because the concept, gameplay and aesthetic are what I've been searching for in a game; no DRM is delicious icing on the cake.

In other words, I've never thought, "That game looks fantastic! Shame it's only on [software], otherwise I'd totally buy and play the crap out of it." I have said this about hardware, though. Damn you Demon's Souls!

I'm not sure when the "all my things in one place" became such a desirable attribute, either. If it's on my computer where I can readily access it, I'm happy.
