Just a short thought but would fighters be more effective if they split up and each fighter flanked a ship from a different direction?  Right not they all cluster together making them vulnerable to things like flak and are easily protected against since all the damage is coming from a small angle.

That would be more effective, but I'd be worried about it becoming too good. Perhaps if each fighter squadron, as a whole, went for a different side....

I thought I'd try to increase the number of fighters in a wing to 12 as it seems the higher the number of fighters the higher chance they flank from a different side, but Starsector just crashes :(

Is it too much to ask for a few hundred fighters on screen at once?

There is a cap of 6 fighters per wing IFRC, so your idea wont work.

Thanks! Though wouldn't it be glorious to have enormous fighter battles? I mean stupid stupid stupid big fights that bring your PC down to 20 FPS kind of size?

Thanks! Though wouldn't it be glorious to have enormous fighter battles? I mean stupid stupid stupid big fights that bring your PC down to 20 FPS kind of size?

Isn't Xenoargh working on this? I remember seeing a post of his about how he removed the normal engine glows and added sprites to improve performance.

It wouldn't surprise me, he knows how to tweak the buggery out of the engine. I don't remember seeing a particularly vast fighter fleet in my last vacuum game, I might make a post on that thread.

I have had up to 200 Fighters in a battle at once at playable framerates, after the last few things I've done.  I test routinely with 60 fighters and a few other ships without any major hickups.

I would be mighty happy to have a stand-alone mod which does that for the vanilla game. I am intrigued by your statements and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. ;D
