getting ships to stay back (aka. suicidal missile ships)
« on: October 18, 2013, 05:39:22 AM »

So, my current fleet has a ship with a bunch of LRMs on it, and what I really want it to do is stay the hell away from the front lines* and spam missiles upfield. The problem I have is that it keeps charging into (close range!) combat when the only other armament it has is PD guns. Is there any way to get it to stop? I've tried setting it its own waypoint behind the rest of my fleet, but half the time it ignores it.

* Obviously if the enemy fleet goes after it that's fine; it's up to me to protect it.

Likewise, I had Sunders armed with Tachyon Lance (and graviton beams and light needlers) stupidly fly closer to weapons range of enemy ships, instead of staying back and firing the lance at targets of opportunity.

Ships with support weapons do not stick to their support roles, they go on full attack.

The way"point" is more of an area, pretty big actually, at least three grid squares. Try placing the order even further back.

The game was completed 8 years ago and we get a free expansion every year.

Arranging holidays in an embrace with the Starsector is priceless.

What Gothars says is very true.  The ships have a pretty long tether, but once they reach that limit, they won't go any further.  Like he says, about 3 grid squares.  Once you get used to the rough distance, you can actually get a nice line of defense where the ships come out to meet foes, but wont push any further.

It would be nice to have a waypoint with a much tighter leash, as well.

Also note, there are a couple types of waypoints.  The 'Defend' one is kind of open ended... ships will assign themselves to it or possibly move to a less occupied objective.  Then there's another one that's more rigid, I forget the name, where only the specific ships you select will go there.  It says so in the description when you mouse over it...

What I think should be done is being able to set AI pilot behaviour in the refit/fleet screen. Not fixed roles, but more like guidelines. That or make crew decide their behaviour.
