Suicidal frigates?
« on: October 14, 2013, 03:02:10 PM »

I don't remember frigates having this much problem avoiding friendly fire. Tried Frontal shields and Omni, tried with Accelerated Shields and with Auxiliary Thrusters.. my tempests end up taking more damage from my flagship than they take from enemy fire. And thats both with autofire on or off. With it on, i barely fire my beams even though they might pass clear of the frigates, but it doesn't even hesitate to fire a Gauss round that will eventually end up impacting the engines of some poor friendly frigate. Manually firing, they still have a deathwish to enter my cone of fire.

I'm ending up actually separating myself from my frigates just so i won't damage them. Didn't the AI in previous versions try to avoid your 'mouse gaze' while targetting? And speaking of, i didn't see any ships do the heroic 'take one for the team'-behaviour to take a shot instead of letting it pass on the ship the player's piloting.

Put a character up to 40 flying a capship with frigates and this is really becoming a problem. The number of time a Tempest sets itself exactly in my line of fire and refuses to shove off even though it could attack with both weapons from another angle made me weary of using them in an assist role around my flagship.

Not just frigates, destroyers too, especially Medusa.  Also, ships with less range tend to swarm closer to a target and get in the way more.  Lashers armed with mostly machine guns are worse than Lashers armed with needlers.

Yes, Medusa-class ships are very prone to blocking your shots... I'm running around with an Apogee-class cruiser with a complement to of two Medusa-class destroyers... It's disappointing to see it too. They can be extremely effective when luck is on your side and they move like an unit. I've seen them split a target in a pincer maneuver and attack opposite sides of a vessel, something that spells certain doom to the ship caught in between them. Sometimes it even seems they're smart enough to team up with my cruiser and attack a ship from three different angles.

It's those times that are truly great. I can rip through entire fleets like paper when we work together.

I usually set my Tempests and Medusas to guard a spot a good distance behind where I am setting up my cruisers.  I pick a spot about 2 map squares behind where I intend to make my stand.  They'll come out to fight the enemy frigs and fighters that try to get behind my cruisers, but they generally stay out of the way of my big guns.

They can usually handle anything that flanks me without my help, but I'm close by if they get too many cruisers coming in the side.

I have noticed this as well.  Also, often when I try to flank with my frigates/destroyers, they will instead manoeuver to stay clumped with me, which can cause all sorts of problems, like ship collisions and line of fire issues.

I'm finding that they just outright force themselves between my flagship and what I'm shooting, and try to stay in the way at all costs. I'm thinking something in the AI is setup backwards.

Again, i remember in earlier versions, ala 0.54 that they specifically stayed out of the firing line even to the measure of them not shooting if you're aiming 'through them' and just scootering off.

Also annoying they seem less prone to go off and kick ass on their own I had two that seemed to decide I needed a escort, and they followed me around getting in the way rather than taking put bombers and destroyers.

They never used to die so much or be so lacking in utility.

Shorter ranged craft really should flank behind enemy ships if longer ranged ships are engaging in front.
