Is it possible to have a gun that is kinetic and explosive in this game that is ammo based or is it just one or the other?

Well if its both kinetic and explosive, then its equally good against shields and armor. You can use energy damage with ammo on a ballistic mount, like the Mjolnir.

yeah I was thinking of making a gun similar to the Air force A-10 main gun to put on a slow fighter but it is ammo based and that will be its only gun, was just really curious.

I think energy damage would be a good choice if your only going to have 1 (magnificent - I love the A10 gatling cannon) gun on it for an assault fighter. Just kinetic or just explosive would make it bad against armor or shields, respectively. I think the Assault fighter in the game uses a mix of weapons so its good against both.

You could also have two separate weapons on top of each other, one explosive and one kinetic.

O.o this is a really odd question given way the damage types actually work.

Kinetic does 200% damage to shields, 50% damage to armor
High Explosive does 200% damage to armor, 50% damage to shields
Energy damage does 100% damage to all types

Surely the solution to your one-size-fits-all weapon is Energy damage
A weapon that does:
100 Kinetic
100 High explosive
would do 250 damage to Shields,
       and 250 damage to armor

So simply make it an energy weapon that does 250 Energy damage and your problem is solved.


However if that's not to your taste the Blackrock mod has a weapon called the "Shard Autocannon" which does Kinetic damage with some under-the-hood modifier - that I in no way understand - that gives it a chance to do significant damage vs armor/hull, maybe you can take a look at that.

Was just trying to make a gun off of one of the fighters I used to work on while I was in the military, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAU-8_Avenger we also used to test new types of rounds like a armor piercing hi explosive type round, only reason why I asked.
