Buffalo MkII's revenge: A competition for the foolish!
« on: September 17, 2013, 06:01:11 PM »

We all know how Buffalo's are treated in Corvus, they're glorified piƱatas waiting to be cracked open for their delicious supplies... But today that changes! ( maybe! )

It's always bothered me that Buffalo MkII's were so mishandled by the AI so I've decided to see just how far you can push them.
The rules are simple:
1) Provide screenshot of the defeated ship and your buffalo still in (roughly) one piece.
1.5) Provide screenshot of refit screen so everyone can bask in your genius
2) Use the "Random Battle" mission to obtain a Buffalo MKII so as to avoid having any skill points

3) Have fun!
Edit: Forgot to mention the Full Damage setting :D

I'll start off with a Mule and a Hammerhead:

Love this idea! Now to try to figure out how to kill a onslaught with the darned thing. I will be back in a few days with my findings!

Then get to your ship, you launch in 5."

after having run a few down for their wonderful fleet slowing 4.0 Burn speed.

Decided to check the codex description for this thing, Its pretty awesome sounding and really lends itself to this thread.

AI piloting, or human?

The latter seems somewhat of a cheat, given the major problem with the effectiveness of the Buffalo 2 is the way the AI uses its stock loadout.

Human piloting. its supposed to test your creativity with loadouts, and more specifically tactics in taking down ships considerably larger than you.

Also; you could throw shields on it, and play the stamina game, run your enemies out of ammo.
Unless its a tier 3 ship, in which case, good luck

Trust me when I say that it's a terrible loadout. It's literally impossible to kill a Mule with the stock Buffalo MkII with a human pilot, though I'd like to see you succeed.

hmm.. Mule has around 9K EHP past shields which are 1/1 flux/damage. along with 60 flux a second upkeep. Totaly flyx cap is 4200, disipation is 250.

The pilum LRM's can put out a total of 15,000 damage. (every missile from every barrage and all ammo)

using the Antimatter blaster and possibly the vulcans(with the vulcan buff) if you can avoid the Mules only real weapon (pulse laser) and play the missile dodge game to pass the Sallys...

maybe. you might be able to do it, would require a good ammount of luck and good timing with the Mule overloading and venting at the right moments you can put Pilums's in his side.

it'd be a very long fight. but its plausible.

You only more 40 faster than the Mule, it's not enough to close the distance even when he decides to Vent and he'll NEVER overload from a single Pilum. There's also no avoiding the pulse laser. In practice it hits 60-70% of its shots and disables your frontal weapons.
Feel free to prove me wrong however :)

A magician never reveals his secrets.

Spoiler
But I'm no magician, so here goes ;)

The main problem is getting around without taking too much damage. To do that, it's best to let the Onslaught burn-drive into a nebula, while you come towards him. That takes some practice (<- this is an understatement). Once you are in his back, you have to kill him quickly, you can survive there maybe a minute thanks to heavy armor. Also he will try to burn drive away, which you should not allow (I did though). So fire the two Reapers and then three Atropos from point-blank range, which obliterates the armor and brings the bad boy down to about 1/3 hull. Then the Vulcan, which does 500DPS now, melts away his HP. The Ion Cannon keeps his engines down (more or less) and helps suppressing weapons. When he's down to a few hundred HP, you have to get out of there and only keep your Railgun in range, which will hopefully finish the beast off while you're outside his explosion radius. Killing without surviving is comparably easy, just bring more torpedoes.
During this whole process it is important to turn around a lot so the incoming damage is distributed equally over your armor and so your weapons don't get disabled.

I'd make a video, but It takes a lot of repetition and I bored of that by now. Also I'd first have to get the software.
