Requesting some artwork for the modding community
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:51:56 AM »

As the majority over in the modding "scene" know, the new 0.6a will bring out ALOT more playground for a economy/trading/piracy mechanics.

While its great we have a huge lack of artwork for possible products used in trading, im sure some of you are familiar with how Freelancer's had these that only served as a income from transporting from one place to another, a few ppl knew where were the most profitable routes to get as much credits in the game, even faster then "spamming" missions on the stations.

Freelancer simple system works, on any game with trading, but its bland and anyone will get bored after a few hours for doing nothing but trading, this can be solved by adding some extra components EVE had while not going for the extreme some of the game including EVE and X3(?) went, blueprints needed specific materials that grand players/clans/guilds/factions Ships/Stations/Planetary Bases, while adding more depth to the game, extending the "late game" alot.

So my request to the ones gifted with the Capacity/Patience/Love for drawing, creating new products that can later be added to a system we coders can create would be extremely thankful, besides we got over 500~ish ships made, how about doing something different for a change.

Heres some examples:

http://freelancer.wikia.com/wiki/Commodities

PS: Forgive my poor grammar and english...

EDIT: There's also a lack of Planet Textures!

I will be going crazy on creating "cargo" once 0.6a comes out. Mainly intended for the Tore Up Plenty mod. But anyone else is welcome to the artwork once it is out there.  :)

I can't wait to try and sprite some cargo for a new mod (if my muse hits me)

I see those images on the Eve pages are png with an invisible background. Kind of tempting to use those. ^_^'
If you have photoshop, finding a picture on the internet, scaling it down and adding a drop shadow to it probably is enough to make it fit. :)

There should be plenty of planets to knock yourself out.
Here are a bunch I collected/edited: Click!
Thule also has some, in the Spiral Arms thread.
And here are a bunch of real gems: Click! Remember to credit the guy. I replaced most of my mods' planets with these. They're absolutely stunning.

Edit: I think these might fit;

and I think these fit not at all; :P

I'd love to help with a few of the trade goods, but sadly I don't have access to my main desktop / graphics tablet at the moment, and won't for the next two weeks or so.

For planet textures, I'd suggest looking up SpaceEngine. You can export the procedurally generated maps for any planet you want--diffuse, bump, clouds, gas bands, etc.

Thanks for the help guys, seems like we're only missing high populated planets with huge metropolis or simply completly covered like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coruscant

Raw and processed minerals seem a good way to start, it also provides for a possible mining modding aspect of the game, what kind of metals should we go for?

Bismuth? Palladium?

Should go for the more sci-fi soundy precious metals.  :)

Hum, for precious metals, not really, i think the ones most used nowadays work nicelly for example:
Platinum, Gold and Silver.

But raw materials for Space constructions i fully agree with you.

It should be done in one consistent style that will fit starsector well, maybe we should wait and see how official artworks will look alike.

I'm going to try fashioning some icons for these things in the following week:

Precious metals:
Gold (jewelry, electronics)
Silver (jewelry, electronics)
Palladium (electronics)
Platinum (jewelry, electrodes, oxygen sensors, engines)
Cobalt (alloys, batteries)

Other metals:
Titanium (hulls/hull plating)
Iridium (alloys/hulls)
Tungsten (alloys, armaments, electronics)
Aluminium (alloys/hulls)
Lithium (medical/ceramics/electronics)

Vegetables
Wheat
Meat
Medicine
Small arms

@Ravendarke: I agree. But maybe our own work can be placeholders until Alex reveals more stuff. :)

Maybe a good idea for temporary icons?

(Aluminium, cobalt, gold, iridium, lithium, palladium, platinum, silver, titanium, tungsten)

They look great and do look like something that fits SS.

Can you try the actual reverse, being the tiny icon storage, EVE goes this too, by adding a icon that identify a specific good, for example, these can be a "possess-able material" or a "raw material" meaning that it can be transformed into a processed into materials used for construction or sold

I don't exactly understand what you mean. ???
You mean making the supplies crate small and the metal icons large?

Thats exactly what i meant, the small icon should specify what type of goods they are, a specific icon for raw materials should represent any type of good that can be processed, just like EVE does it:

They all have the same small icon. Its a great way to identify what type of good it is by just looking at that icon.

Ah, gotcha. :)

Edit: Icons source: http://www.iconarchive.com.
Spoiler
[close]
Icons to be put in the lower right corner of every product/ware.

I found some wisdom today and will wait until 0.6 before I'm going to create icons that might become useless in the next version.
