Videocard death is facinating
« on: June 27, 2013, 02:06:40 AM »

So my graphics card is slowly dieing and it is producing some interesting anomalies. The screen flickers a little and jumps side to side. Sometimes the colors get a little too bright also. I've opened up my case and have a desk fan blowing on it, and that helps a little. The next step is to try replacing the thermal compound. It is an old card though so it might just be its time.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a program that does that intentionally? It would be a nice touch while playing games that featured rundown old tech in it. It is a very nice touch while flying around in the low tech ships in Starsector for example. Or the Minmatar from EVE. It really added to the ambiance of Alien versus Predator 2000.
Thanks.

Yes, it's called MSI Afterburner. Just push the core clock to about 2 jiggahertz.

Just kidding, but no program I know of will cause artifacting deliberately. You can get shader packs like SweetFX to similar stuff. Kinda.

If it were possible to mod the blinding flash of ships being destroyed in Starsector, one could totally turn the white out into a fuzz out as hardware is bombarded with radiation from the recently slain ship.

Brilliant idea for the destruction of your flagship.

Personally, I'd happily trade the white out for a less intense white out, followed by a fuzzy, glitchy HUD. As ships take damage if they're insanely close to each other, perhaps the intensity of the fuzz could be also figured by proximity.

I don't know of a program, but if you remove the cover of your pc and get a screwdriver you could poke the videocard with your screwdriver every time your ship gets hit.

I'm not sure how effective that would be. The card is grounded by the PSU anyway
