When I'm playing lazily I often want to forget entirely about firing weapons so I can manage just the bare minimum; movement, shield, fire-control (toggling autofire), target prioritization, etc.

The only way to achieve this at the moment is to assign weapons to just 4 out of the 5 weapon groups, and utilize the 5th group as the idle group.

My suggestion is simple; allow the player to have no weapon group selected.
In addition to this, when no weapon groups are selected, all weapon arcs would be displayed.

If the tilde key wasn't already utilized (for toggling fire arcs), I'd suggest it for this function.

I'm in the same camp as Gothars with this...I think it will get very microy and tedious, and anyway the PD is kinda meant to prioritize missiles then vessels especially on low PD craft.

press 'r' on while your on the active group to set it to autofire.
That's what I do when I start with a shuttle and fight. It works rather well.
EDIT: while this may not deselect it, it may set it to autofire, you may need to press '2' if you only have the one group.
(May not be 'R', but I'm fairly sure it is)
