Diversion assignment
« on: May 15, 2013, 05:37:03 PM »

I think it could be really useful, I imagine it like this:
Create a waypoint in an area where you want to draw some enemy attention with minimal risk to your own ships. Ships on the Diversion assignment stay out of enemy weapon range and only dart in from time to time to make sure they can not be ignored. If no enemy is near they approach the nearest enemy and try to lure it towards the waypoint with the assignment.

The priorities would be like this:
1. Have enemy focused on you
2. Stay out of enemy weapon range
3. Stay close to your waypoint
4. Deal damage to the enemy

Of course fast ships and such with long range weapons are preferred.
Similar to the Harass assignment, but area focused and safer.

The use is pretty obvious I think, split an enemy fleet (optimally consisting of slower ships than your fleet) if you can't take it on all at once.

Thoughts?

e/ It might be nice to have advanced assignments like this unlocked by the Leadership skill tree.

I can't imagine diversion working with missile harassment because those run out too quickly, except for fighters that reload that stuff.

#3 should be "make ENEMY stay close to waypoint (herding them)

I like advanced assignments being unlocked.

Love this idea. The tactics portion of combat definitely needs more options. Having these more advanced things unlockable by the Leadership skill tree and/or Officers would be interesting.

Diversion would defiantly make the tactics side of the game more interesting.

The enemy will stay close to the waypoint if 1) and 3) are fulfilled. Actively herding them would only work against inferior ships and be very dangerous otherwise, so not in the spirit of this assignment.

Yeah, especially options that feel like they make a real difference. Right now I'm hesitant to invest skill points to get more CP, simply because I'm often not sure if my commands have significant influence on the outcome of a battle.

It might be nice to have advanced assignments like this unlocked by the Leadership skill tree.

What if all things were unlocked by the leadership skill tree, something like a "command" skill or something?
Level 1 would activate the combat commands (harrass, strike, etc.); Level 5 would unlock the advanced waypoint commands (assemble Civilian, assemble carrier, recon); Level 10 would allow you to transfer command.

You would have the basics, like "defend waypoint", "engage" and stuff like that, but you would need the skill for more complex commands.

I haven't played in ages, so I can't remember all of the names of the commands.

Transfer Command would have to be a default as well.

hmm, probably...
What would make a level 10 assignment, then?

(we should probably move this to another thread to keep it OT)
