How does one do this mission? I saw the posts for the Predator or Prey mission and those threads helped me succeed in that one but, dire straits really does seem impossible.

They are hard i ahve done well on the other missions but damn those are hard... especial predator or prey i just get roasted. Think its because my playstyle is to remove enemy fighters and bombers and then focus on the rest, but they have so many and i have so few.

Dire Straits is probably the hardest mission in Starfarer right now.
I managed to get a 20-30% a few times by killing the fighters and frigates before deploying any civilian ships (and even then, lure the enemy ships in one direction and rally the civilians in the other before retreating). Keeping all your fighters and flak in one place seems to work for that.
