Yeah, it's a common but not automatic thing that Steam will honour keys for non-Steam versions- it's something the devs have to arrange with Valve. So we can't absolutely know whether or not it'll happen, we can just make decisions based on the probability.

I prefer to buy it from Alex directly, it gives them 100 percent of the funds, I believe steam takes a cut, and I understand that if they sell more they would make more money, but I don't want to have to start steam every single time I want to play Starsector.

Agreed, I suppose they could still sell it through their own site, without steam getting a cut

I think if Alex get the game on Steam, (hopefully it does), he would email all his purchasers with a unique URL to a single use Steam keygen. It would be something like the humble bundle, if you guys have bought one.

You guys don't get that warm feeling because you've helped an indie developer to to reach success? No, me neither ;D

I did help him, I already bought starsector, then bought it for a couple of friends, just not a real big fan of steam, mainly because with steam you technically don't own your games, you lease them.

I'm glad I funded this wondeful game, it's my first venture into modding, and a great inspiration for me. Money can't express my love for this game

Yes I would rather send the money to Alex and his crew to do the game, because don't you need time frames when you go to get a game greenlit on steam?

This is the case with all game purchases (or the purchase of any copyrighted media).  You are buying a license to use a copy (or copies) of the software under certain conditions and limitations. If you truly "owned" it, you would be free to make as many copies you liked and distribute them as you see fit.

Steam just adds the condition of "you have to come online at least once and sign into our program" in order to use your licensed copy.

Yeah but say your steam account is locked, you have NO access to any games on steam EVER. Until they either decide you are not at fault or they ban you. Steam is just a true lease, until some magical gremlin messes up your account, it has happened before. Like when I was deployed someone tried to use my steam account, so valve locked it, got back home from deployment, says it was banned, I had to show proof that the IP address that tried to access the account was from the US and not where I was deployed just to get all my stuff unbanned.

Steam will close an account if it is from a different IP, last I checked Alex's game doesn't do that :P

Still rather get the game from Alex though.

Getting games directly is always better cos of no DRM. On Steam, you can lose everything you legitimately bought if you got hacked. People just like Steam key so they can show off their game collection and have proof. (Unfortunatly, i'm a sucker for that.)
