I would like the game to have better hull hit effects. Right now, the ships just look like bullet sponges and explode when enough damage is taken. Bullets just hit and thats it. It would be nice to have some detail such as decompression, or flames depending on when the projectile lit. A laser should create a line in the ship to give it the impression that it is cutting the ship.

i said better hit effects with depth because id like to see like a huge slug round or a missile impact into my ship.. preferably their ship.. and see like 3 guys and some debri or what ever go flying out from maybe a hole i made in their ship.. and even then add in post game results if it happened to me maybe say i lost 3 crew members and these few items from my cargo

Alright, poll is closed now, thanks for your participation guys :)

The results are much closer together than I expected.

The two most wished for graphical additions are more fancy hull damage effects and nicer shields. If I remember correctly Alex was already considering to revamp the shields, so the result should be a hint that's a worthwhile thing to do. The hull damage thing actually already spawned a response from the modder xangle13, who introduced smoke effects for hits in this thread. Still interesting for vanilla though, I think.

The second most wanted group consist of:
 - Animations on hulls via the new "decorative weapons", something we might well see...eventuallly.
Here's what David said about it:
It'd be cool to do though of course UI & new campaign stuff shall come first.

- Visible hullmods, at least for those hullmods that have to do with the outside part of a ship.

- Better explosions upon the death of ship: Another thing Alex was afaik already considering, so it has a real chance of being implemented eventually. I'm surprised it didn't score higher.

- Damage effects with depth, so that a damaged ship doesn't start to look more and more flat. First someone had to come up with a workable solution though, this attempt had mixed reactions. But obviously many people are not quite happy with the current look, so maybe this is something that should be investigated.

On an intermediate level are escape pods and cool nebula effects. The former is at least already realized by the modding community, the latter would have possible been too demanding anyway.

Having different layers or poshing up the UI did not seem to be too important to the voters, something I personally find unfortunate.

Also interesting to note is that having lots of options to turn certain effects on or off wasn't seen as essential by most.

Just found screenshot of how animated (planet) backgrounds could look like. Wish I had seen this earlier. Imagine the clouds moving...Doesn't that look awesome?

For some reason, I ignored almost everything and instead focused on the info mentioning all objectives lost. Reminds me of my many hours (454h, 30m) spent playing battlefield 3 and the announcer cries it out.
"The enemy is in control of all objectives. The ENEMY is in CONTROL of ALL of the objectives. I repeat, -ALL- objectives."

Also flak, on the hammerhead? I thought the only medium sized ballistic mounts were the two hardpoints at the front.

I'd like to see some blast/distortion waves ripple out when a ship explodes or a hard-hitting weapon like a torpedo or hellbore slug hits. Something like in this video but perhaps not so exaggerated:

http://youtu.be/yiFOhqPEI6g?t=15s watch for when the missiles and other big explosions happend, it sends out a "blastwave" that distorts the air. I think that should be pretty easy to implement and will look good if not overdone.

There can be nebulas, but they always look like they just sit under your ship,
I do wanna see the environment be affected a bit more though.

When bullets fly and make rift through nebula that go back as before after a while or when laser fire and it make clean cut through it? Something like that?

You watched the new star wars? I think it's in episode 2, where Jango was being chased, I think by Obi Wan. Pops out a little bomb from behind that asplodes with the most awesome noise ever. (Seriously, it's like, the best boom fx ever) And that boom lets out a massive blue wave that cuts through the asteroids like a knife through butter.
