where do you get your sound effects ?
« on: March 26, 2013, 12:34:09 AM »

the title couldnt be more clear.
I cant help but think "damn these are cool" when i hear FX like cycerin's solenoid quench gun, keptin's hadron collider or thule's HVPC (or barbarossa cannon for that matter) to only name a few.

and it got me wondering, where do they get those awesome sounds ? or do they even make them themselves ?

i'd really like to know because for me, wether its a full game or a mod, a good array of sound effect is a mandatory element to a good experience and id really like to expand the audio library of my mod.

for that matter, i will thank MrDavidoff for lending me the one from his files dump

I use this site for most of my needs, it's hardly robust but I don't usually need that much
http://www.freesound.org/

Then you can edit it with Audacity, free sound editing program
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

gotta say though, I'm not a sound guy, so there's probably better advises from others. Still, good luck! :)

pretty much what gunny said.

Audacity is a pretty straight forward sound editor without any knowledge necessary. Just try it and see what you can come up with.

Freesound is a fantastic website, a fantastic time consuming website. You will find yourself surfing there for hours, and you just wanted to check out a couple of sound snippets, or is that just me? ;)

We do have some people that makes their own sounds from scratch. "looks at Cycerin"

But yeah, we mostly find our sounds from freesound and the like.

nice thanks !

any tips as for mixing one's own sound ? obviously it cant be that easy

lol, i was thinking about "hiring" someone as a sound editor like i "hired" pelhamds for sprites. with this mindset and at this pace, my mod would quickly become a huge joint project XD

Joint project?

I see what you did there.

Also, ripping sounds from Lua databases or other games is usually fun (I've made whole flash games using only TF2 sounds with little to no complaint from users).

If you have the money to blow(and time, lots and lots of time), making music with Protools or FL Studio is pretty nice. You can hack up little bits of samplers and change the pitch to make nice laser effects too, if you find any free add-ons for PT or FL.

Out of boredom I've even edited sounds with Notepad++, but that's because I'm bonkers.

If by "good guys" you mean "elitist regime that suppresses colonial independence and thrives off of an overwhelmingly deep gap in wealth between social classes," then yes.

I was going to use this sound for my mod, as a charge up and firing, but the charge up time didn't fit. So you guys can use it.

Fun fact - This sound was remixed from the AWP, AK47, Elite and Desert Eagle sound effects from Counter Strike.
