Newbie questions
« on: February 23, 2013, 11:45:14 AM »

So, yeah, I just got this game.  It looks really cool, and I'm still getting the hang of the whole combat thing.
I can't seem to get past a 41% on Turning the Tables.  Any suggestions?  I take my fleet and head straight for the nav buoy.  No problems killing enemies, but they get away too fast, and I never get to the rest of the objectives.

Hi steelwing, welcome to the forum :)

You probably have the 50% damage option activated. With it your personal ship only takes half damage, but your maximal mission score is 50%. You can deactivate it in the options menu, then you can archive 100%.

To prevent you enemies from fleeing I would recommend to dispose of the smaller, faster enemies first. The Talon fighters for example will not flee as long as the Carrier is still around. Just make sure to not let them dock.

Thanks!  Your suggestion worked out nicely.  I wasn't even aware of that half-damage setting.  I've not read the official manual, but does it point out that setting or its effects?

The in-official manual in my sig mentions it right in the introduction.
If you end up reading in it steelwing, please give some feedback about what is left unclear.

The official one is extremely out of date, I don't know if there are any plans to update it. But I see no need to.

I had read that manual and didn't recall seeing the half-damage setting mentioned, but I see it now.  However, that little sidebar says nothing about how it impacts the player's scoring in the game.  I definitely feel that should be highlighted more.
Otherwise, everything in the manual looks good.  Nice work! :)  My only recommendation might be a Quick Reference for keyboard shortcuts at the end or beginning.

Thanks :)
Added that info and made a keymap

I was thinking about adding a section for missions with tips and strategies, but I don't know if that would be worthwhile. As I understand it missions are pretty much done and everything new in the game will be for the campaign.

Nice.  For now, I'm trying to play missions, since the campaign looks pretty meatless (one system to fly around in and not much to do there other than hunt pirates).

You should check in on our modding section, there you find stuff like "click my signature" that greatly improve your campaign experience.

I played some time ago, and now wanted to pick the game up again to see what had changed, and now i have a rather big problem. Basically, i can't get started.

I assume i just have to restart until i am able to find a pirate fleet i can kill, and be able to survive, too? The re-restart after you fail once is completely impossible, when you start with a *** tanker and no money to hire anything else. So i assume you HAVE to win that first fight so you gain a bit of money? So, hire 2 groups of talons and look for a weak pirate group or something? I distinctly recall stuff becoming a lot easier once you get either a ship that does not suck horribly hard or some kind of fleet going, because at that point you can hunt weaker enemies. But at the start you can't do that, so you have to actually kill something with one of those starter ships which are among the worst possible configurations of the worst possible ships.

If you get the tanker then sell all the fuel and you should have enough to buy an attack frigate like a Lasher. Then, sell the tanker itself and finish buying crew/weapons.

Early game you must hunt only tiny pirate fleets like a Hound/Talons, a Lasher, or best of all try to get a lone Buffalo Mk 2. Save up for a destroyer like a Enforcer or Medusa as once you get your first destroyer you can easily take on the 2-4 ship pirate fleets or even the larger pirate carrier fleets that come with 2-4 fighter wings and say the Condors and the odd Hound/Lasher.

Also, buy an Omen from the Tri-Tach station as soon as you have the cash for a second ship. They are only 6600 credits and dirt cheap to equip. Omens are terrible direct combat ships, but they make one of the best flankers and harassers in the game if you build them for mobility and survivability. Their EMP ship system makes hunting pirates and non-360 degree shielded enemies much easier.

Christ. All this time and I was wondering why in an even match-up or against larger ships the odds were heavily stacked in my favour. Wish I knew it was because "loser mode" was enabled by default. ;-)

Yeah, it's easy to miss turning off that option at first.
