Played the game for probably 3-4 hours straight, only went into hyper space once or twice.  Did the usual, fought a bunch of battles, bought stuff, sold stuff.  Did leave the game paused for probably 1.5 hours while I did other stuff.  Happened after fighting a big battle in hyper space and then when to jumping back into Corvus point alpha.

Aha, good to know. So possibly the "going to hyperspace" is just a trigger for the crash because it tries to allocate a decent chunk of memory, where the actual issue is elsewhere. Let me see if I can track this down.

I had a crash kind of similar except I was in battle in hyperspace. Only problem is that I have no idea what caused it. This was the only thing that looked remotely like a crash log that I could find so this might help?  ???

Hmm. Probably not related to the OutOfMemory issue, and unfortunately, can't tell what's going on from this - only that the crash was in the JVM somewhere, rather than, say, in the graphics drivers.

So after being called away from my pc and leaving starsector running for a couple of hours, paused mid combat, came back and attempted to start again and the starsector window dissapeared. There was a little black box in the top left corner of the screen.

The game was still functioning. I could unpause and pause it and sounds still worked, just couldn't see anything. It's a bit hard to know if this a problem with my computer or the game though.

Quick check of task manager shows java.exe*32 using a little over 1,100,000K of ram. Which is a lot. It's probably an unrelated problem, but you never know.

Edit: So after a little time it came back to life. Not real sure what the problem was.

Now it won't load my save. I'm not quite sure what happened. :-\

There's an unrelated issue w/ some saves, already fixed for 0.6.1a. Sorry! You might try the backup file in the save directory.


@Gibbatron: Thanks for posting that! Hmm. The crash on transition to hyperspace - that looks like it was a very short playsession; was it? Any more info about how long it was/what you were doing/etc would be great. If I could just find some way to reproduce it here, it'd be so much easier to track down.

As far as running for a couple of hours, that seems more or less normal - I've seen other games behave in a similar way, regardless of the technology, so it might be something OS-related. The Java process shows that much memory use because that's how much is allocated for it - it's not likely to actually be using all of it at that point.

It wasn't very long as I had the same crash happen just prior. So I restarted and reloaded the latest save flew around for a bit and went for the transition and it crashed again.

Played a bit last night and didn't leave the corvus system (same save) and had no crashes, although I experience a bit of slowdown when bringing up the fleet screens, especially at stations. Not sure if there is an actual drop in fps though, it could just be a deliberatly slow transition.

I wonder if it's just that my ultrabook can't hack it even with 4gb of ram. I'm not 100% certain how intel's integrated HD4000 handles graphics memory either, but I have a feeling it uses the ram for some of that. Can't remember.

Hmm... you know, that *could* be it, and in that case, there may be a solution.

If you open up the file vmparams (located under C:\Program Files (x86)\Fractal Softworks\Starsector), there should be a portion - partway through the first line - that says:

-Xms512m -Xmx1024m

The first number is how much memory the game grabs right off the bat, and the second number is the maximum. I'm starting to wonder if the error isn't happening when Java tries to grab more memory instead of running garbage collection to clean up its already-allocated memory, because it thinks more is available. If you change the above to:

-Xms512m -Xmx512m

Then it shouldn't try to allocate more memory as it goes, which - if this is the problem - should play more nicely with the video card gobbling up lots of shared memory. Can you give that a try and see if it eliminates the crashes?

I had mine set to 1024 for both XMS & XMX (Java programmer longer than I care to admit).  Maybe it couldn't find enough contiguous memory?  Maybe preallocate the huge arrays at JVM startup to ensure it can find large enough blocks?

Hmm. That might be worth a shot, that that'd lock in the backgrounds (which is the main thing that cares about this) to a fixed size. Although, there are also screenshots to worry about... but the size of that is known at startup.

       Hoping there's a fix in the works for these out of memory crashes because as of right now,Starsector is unplayable with any mods installed.I get the white screen and the out of memory error constantly, including when attempting a simulated battle to test a variant.I have my memory allocation set to 2048-3096 in vmparams but apparently it doesn't help.Game runs on my dedicated graphics board- an Nvidia Geforce Gt 540 M.I can run Skyrim on full so I doubt it's related to my specs.Any other temporary workaround I can use till it is fixed?

Can you try what I suggested a couple of posts up? Just change both numbers to 1024. I'd really appreciate you letting me know whether that helps or not.
