The cult of Lud
« on: December 11, 2012, 09:52:12 AM »

Having read the blog post, there seems t be some confusion around what they stand for.
I just want to start a discussion to see if that might help... ::)
personly, I think they would have at first revolved around a sort of luddite movement that had one person take command of it, using it for power.

To me the cult of Lud are all about a head figure that started his own religion that is as follows: I see the end but i can build an empire that will stop it, all we need to do is kill those that oppose us and take there supplies to feed the empire. Kind of like a bunch of people following some crazy guy (a good example of this is in the syfy movie the Mist). And they have powerfull weapons, but really risky as they just strap as many weapons as posible to there ships because they have no "real" scienests like Tri and Hegmony have. They are probobly the size of tri fleets but not as tough, but tougher than pirates or hegmoney of the same size. Also maybe there are those that kill others constantly and those that believe in peace, but have the same porpose.

Just my thought from the small info i got from this:"I know what it’s going for, something like a faction of deep-green militaristic primitivists who want to return everyone to a state of nature – by force. Not quite the Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri Gaians, not quite the Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri expansion’s Cult of Planet, but they all probably hang out at the same coffee shop, with Lud being the creepy one that sits in the corner polishing their guns."

The other way i take this is they are advanced, not as much as the tri but enough that anyother small fleet is scared to look the wrong way at them. Same ideas they have but they just use less weapons, a Destoyer of theres can 1 shot a overloaded frigate. they just blink at small fleets and they go POOF! either way i cant wait till there added

From what I remember, the Cult want to eliminate the "evil" of technology, as that is what caused the collapse and fuels wars among man. However to do so, they have to use the very weapons of the enemy, that is technology.

So either a bunch of hypocritical fanatics, or paragons of peace among man? You decide, as they say

Maybe wiping them out is just not worth the effort.

Maybe they are contradicting themselves "we want to end technology but we use it to stop it" how about that?

They use low tech ships.
They prabably oppose advanced tech since they see it as hard to replace and requireing UACs more than low tech.

I wouldn't be suprised if somewhere out there was a faction using sub par low tech ships built entirely based on their technological know how (unlike UAC addicted factions that would instantly receed to the feudal age is UACs stopped working for one reason or another).

In my mind I picture the cult of Lud as the revs (Revenants of the Prophet) from L.E. Modesitt Jr's book the Parafaith War.

At a guess I would say that the Cult of Lud was inspired by the Luddites from the 19th century.

Just so long as the Luddites don't make me do any escort missions, I'm OK with whatever diabolical Space-Amishness they're up to.
