Bug in Combat Screen
« on: December 05, 2012, 05:47:44 PM »

So... Here's how I got it:

sitting on Pirate planet with a Hegemony Patrol. We both attempt to engage a pirate fleet at the same time. (Hegemony fleet got priority, I only got to fight the carrier group's surviving fighters.) I'm betting the game put me into combat at the exact same time the game decided that the Hegemony fleet whipped the Pirate capitals. Anyway, after the battle, on the results screen, the "Continue" button is unclickable. Can't do anything.
This required me to terminate the game using Ctrl+Alt+Del. However, now the game's music plays endlessly in the background, forcing me to restart the system to fix it. So, that might be another bug, or something with the sound card. Not sure...
Also, is the current version of the game.

Thanks for the report, I'll check it out. If it happens again, you may be able to get out of it by pressing "Escape" a few times.

Btw, if you do kill it using Task Manager, make sure to also kill the "java" process - that'll take care of anything lingering.

Ok, so I've run into this problem several times now.

What seems to be happening is the game occasionally freezes on the victory screen. No idea what is causing it, hitting escape doesn't do anything, and none of the buttons are clickable. This seems to happen every couple of fights. Windows does not detect the game as "not responding."

Hmm. Are you using any mods?

Are you running the game fullscreen or windowed? Any more info on your system might be helpful. I'm a little surprised that it's happening this frequently for you - I haven't encountered the issue at all, and not getting any other reports of it. There's a chance that there's something specific to your system that's causing it.

A clean re-install may be worth a shot, too.

No mods, game is vanilla. Will try a reinstall... After I backup the save...

I typically run it in windowed.

Interestingly, the crash only seems to happen when I don't commit my flagship to the fight... Or at least thats the only time its crashed so far.

Alrighty, so I did the above... and the issue still persists. No idea what is causing it as this time, it happened after the first battle... So it seems to occur randomly. But the symptoms are always the same, the combat result screen prevents my clicking anything.

I typically run it in windowed mode, perhaps that has something to do with it?

Perhaps your java drivers are out of date, or indeed any other driver? Always worth a check.

Erm... "java drivers" don't really make sense as a concept :)

I kind of doubt that graphics drivers would cause this (Though, again, surprised that it hasn't come up for anyone else! At least, not reported.)

Just to confirm: are you using the latest version of Starfarer, 0.54a? Even if so, a re-download may be worth a try. Surprisingly, there have been one or two cases where it helped resolve an odd-looking problem.

Well, sprry, i meant java there. My phone doesn't like being up this late, and it certainly doesn't like me. xP

I'd go with the redownload and retry. If that does not solve the problem, there is a slight chance it's either the game code or your system. In order to eliminate the second, could you share some of your computer specs? Most importantly here would be the graphics card.

I remember a similar bug, though, where the screens stalled because of dual dialogue  popups, but i thought that that had been fixed quite some time ago.

Hah, I actually just used a redownload! Just to be certain... Unfortunately, problem persists. There is a log file that I can share, but it might not tell much...

I've actually encountered a similar type of problem every now and then when playing (though I am almost always using some sort of mod) except whenever it freezes up on the victory screen, it will suddenly start working again two or three minutes later. If I hadn't waited a bit the first time it happened I wouldn't have known that it would unfreeze, it seems to stay frozen just long enough for the average person to give up on it if they don't know to wait. For me though the problem is very rare, only showing up maybe once in 3 hours.

Hey Tellaris, what kind of PC are you running?
