Starsector 0.97a is out! (02/02/24); New blog post: Simulator Enhancements (03/13/24)
Totally doable. Just yesterday, level 30ish, and i nuked the Haegemony Defense fleet with a Tempest, an Omen and a Hyperion. I think i've been playing this game too long.
Let's say I'm captaining the ISS Slightly Lopsided Isosceles Triangle here.

Its not for me its for a friend i promise....it took me bloody ages to find it but if you want to try it don't ruin your main save, go to a blank save, put in the skills you get at the beginning it makes it easier to find, for example put points into leadership then go to the starfarer folder, saves, your save, campaign.xml. open that up and press Ctrl F. search for whatever aptitude you put points into IE leadership then just mash the search button until you find one that has points assigned to it, the rest will be 0.0 it should be near the bottom when you finally find it. then just throw points at whatever you want, its easiest to give yourself 200 skill points and 30 aptitude points and then close and save then launch your game and hey presto your still level 1 ( unless you change that too) and you have enough points for everything.

Most of that speed probably comes from stacking the new speed mod with augmented engines - that can make anything fast.
