Suggest Offical Variants
« on: November 16, 2012, 08:07:54 PM »

Just a small topic that can partly double as a forum game, but the idea is to suggest to Alex more variants to be added into the game officially to give ships more variety.

I'll start with one of my new variants:

The Eagle Multirole Variant

I like the idea of this thread! Especially if the variants produced are more thematic rather than brutally efficient.

Plus, I just love seeing screenshots of the variants you guys make :)

Odyssey Exploration Variant: This battlecruiser has been refitted to allow for deep space exploration. Its defenses consist of 360° shields and heavy PD armaments, allowing it to survive lengthy missions with minimal damage. Additionally its long range lasers, rockets and its augmented engines allow it to hold its distance to any potential foe. Its 30 OP hangar allows for several wings of light scout and probe craft. Destroyers and light cruiser are no match for this voyager, everything else can be easily outdistanced on the way to the next star system.

Just made a few "low tech/mining" variants of some ships:  :)

Let's start with an Hammerhead: I can see this ship being the backbone of the defense fleet of a small and independent mining colony, thus being able to field only outdated, cheap or non-military equipment like the Arbalest, mining lasers and annihilators. It's not THAT bad, after all.

Talking about a mining colony, there must be a transport ship to carry people and cargo around. That role is fulfilled by a Valkyrie-class destroyer, which follows the same rule as the Hammerhead: cheap, low tech equipment. Barely stands a chance against anything heavier than a Talon wing, but does its job.

Cheap and low-tech doesn't always mean weak. Never ever underestimate a bunch of miners willing to protect the fruits of their hard work with their lives. All it takes is a light, fast frigate like the Vigilance, some suicidal crewmen, an even more suicidal captain and a mining blaster to create a death trap powerful strike ship, able to cripple destroyers and unwary cruisers.

I just LOVE midline ships, they're so flexible  :D

Ps: it would be really nice to be able to have an in-game description for each variant and not only a description for the single hulls.  :)

Guardian Class Paragon, a variant of Paragon built for superior defense and sustainability at the expense of fire power.  Built for escorting large convoys it provides superior protection for any ship it's size.  While it lacks weapons intended for combating other larger ships it's vast array of burst laser arrays shred fighters and frigates alike which are the main predator of trader convoys.

Could we suggest our brutally efficient loadouts and have them possibly eventually in some ridiculous hardcore mode?

Totally should.

Some more less than optimal builds:

Reformed Medusa Class Destroyer, a variant of Medusa that has been reformed for mining work after being recovered on the field in a mostly functioning order.  They're equipped with staple mining weapons along with minor self-defense weapons against pirates and raiders.  Many of it's subsystems are still functional even if it's original weaponry isn't.

Reformed Wolf Class Frigate, a variant of Wolf that has been stripped down and refitted for use by mining corporations that need a cheap ship capable of mounting a Mining Blaster.  It still carries it's phase skimmer as it was considered to be of value when navigating asteroid fields and avoiding narrow impacts.

Spoiler

Ancient Lasher Class Frigate, a variant of Lasher that dates back several centuries back when even it's modest loadout was considered to be a serious threat.  It's equipped with two missile racks and a small array of machine guns and twin mortar launchers that back when it was constructed would easily shred through most other space craft due to them at the time still being fairly fragile unlike current generation ships.

The anti-phase Enforcer is protected from any surprise attacks by its 360° shields. Its two heavy maulers on their extra fast turning turrets have just as much coverage, ready to quickly react to any decloaking foe. Once the enemy is spotted, the accelerated Salamanders can suppress it and make a escape impossible.

This design was first conceived shortly after phase ships made their appearance on the battlefields, a time in which they could not yet be as easily detected. Pirate and smuggler organisations of that time were terrified by the prospect of phased ships observing their illegal operations from a distance, ready to strike without warning. Several of this destroyers would accompany the main fleet in medium distance, forming a phase protected zone.

The Apogee 'Iron Fist' Variant, a combat conversion to the typical exploration spacecraft, it's centered around a single massive plasma cannon that's it's main armament.  It carries several support weapons meant to pressure or overload enemy shield systems while the plasma cannon is used to punch through the remaining shielding and armor.  It lacks the versatility and survivability of the standard variants but more than makes up for it by being a powerful combat converted civilian vessel.  Despite the conversion the Sensor drones inside the hull were not replaced with stronger military grade Defense drones or Terminator drone subsystems due to the ability of the sensor drones to greatly increase the combat efficiency of the equipped weaponry.  Overall this conversion of the exploration vessel was dangerous enough that this variant was given the nickname 'Iron Fist' as it punches through most lesser ships with ease.
