Well... Darn, and other assorted curses. RIP Maccie
« on: November 05, 2012, 04:16:12 AM »

For a long while now, my big computer has been rather... Sick. Recently I've added one terabyte of memory and a new external solid state hard drive, in the hopes of making it a bit better.

It has just died! Needless to say I am really rather >explicit language expressing just how peeved I am at this moment in time<.

For some unbeknown the solid state has decided it really likes the idea of of being a frying pan, and that it doesn't need to remember anything.

Luckily, all of my most important stuff is safe... Ish. All of my college stuff is on a memory stick, and most of my personal data in trapped inside of the terabyte passport.

Unfortunately, everything starfarer is gone! Although, I do still have my activation key safe, and the most recent version of my mod in safe an sound in the cloud.

There is a remote chance the everything can be fixed... But currently it seems I'm going to have to find a n computer!

Sorry to hear that :( It sounds like the whole problem here was insufficient cooling.

Wait, are you saying the SSD has heated up so much that some other components died of heat? Otherwise I don't get why you can't just exchange your hard disk...

No, that was just a stupid turn of phrase on my part.

From what I can tell now, it seems apple pushed out a secret little firmware update that killed it.

If you can prove it was entirely Apple's update's fault, it sounds like you could get compensation in some way.

Of course, I don't really know what I'm talking about, I just happen to live with a technological genius.

Hah! And yeah, it would very much like to be compensated... The resident tech genius is turning into the hulk.

Oh crud... I've just learned that the external drive is totally dead, there is no data on it. Apparently it can't even be wiped, something to do with the last block not bring readable.

You can wipe it with a magnet and physically force everything off it.

EDIT: Unless that's the SSD you're talking about, then I don't know...

Heh, but what we really want to do is save it. I used the point of not being able to wipe it to show how very dead it is.

It seems it's going to be a refund and a new computer... Which is going to be expensive, and we've already spent a fair amount of money setting the thing up before it died.

Prove this is all apple's fault, then show how much data you've lost, then sue them woth a lawyer. get millions.

Yeah, that would be great, but we don't even know for sure what's happened >.<

Time will tell.

Edit:

Time has told me that it was actually just the hard drive that failed... Pah, here's hoping that time machine ran a backup before this whole farce started

Hurm, how do you mean? The computer was a mac, but the extra terabyte came from a passport.
