A suggestion for suggestions - A proper system
« on: November 04, 2012, 05:31:25 AM »

Currently, there is no real system other than: "I want to suggest something, so I'll suggest something".

Whilst there is nothing wrong with that (and it works rather well), I would rather see something with a bit more structure - so as not to waste Alex's time.

I suggest that we organise the suggestion part of the forum into two parts:

Suggestion Discussion - The sub forum in which suggestions are generated, discussed and refined by the community to a form that the majority of people agree on, Etc

Suggestion Proposal - After suggestions have been through the discussion phase and are ready to be suggested properly the new and improved suggestion would be posted here, for the Devs to consider at their leisure.

Thoughts?

I like it. Anything to make it easier on Alex and get our thoughts more clearly conveyed to him is a great idea!

Is this really needed though?

Alex (and the other developers) already read a lot of the forums already, and they have chimed in on the threads, regardless of their location, whenever they have had something to add.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with that (and it works rather well),
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I would rather see something with a bit more structure - so as not to waste Alex's time.
If I were Alex I'd probably pop in to the Suggestion Discussion anyway just to see what was going on, so a Suggestion Proposal forum would seem a bit redundant. Not only that, but the reason behind a suggestion is just as important as the suggestion itself.

The only question is:

Would you like that, Alex?

The is a tradeoff to keep in mind: that any more complexity means that less suggestions will get through and whether or not this will lead to higher quality suggestions or less work is not necessarily going to happen

Although unless there is a plethora of long poorly worded suggestions it may not be worth to create a format and then go through the effrot of trying to maintain it (the end-goal may be achieved anyway as people become more adept at creating suggestions)

If there is going to be any changes it may be simpler for there to be a general format on a sticky so people can see how to put there ideas together in a cohesive manner (this may be  more useful for bugfixing so people know what information to give, if they can).

It is also good to keep in mind the new player who perspective is valuable precisely because he so unfamiliar with the game and the forum.

Well, how about at least sticky-ing up a suggestion template to streamline idea and thoughts?

something like,

Nerf Buffalos Mk2:
Buffalos are op... because of their ability to spam missiles,

How:
Change up 1-2 small missile slots into 1 medium ballistic/2 small ballistics.

Benefits?
Makes it a less one trick pony, and improves overall fighting ability of pd heavy fleets

Notes:
May go against lore of being terrible combat ships,

Oh and, not serious suggestion :D
