Clockwork Empire
« on: October 09, 2012, 09:07:02 AM »

Clockwork Empire is Gaslamp Games' (Dungeons of Dredmor) next project, seems it will be a kind of intermediate between Dwarf Fortress and Anno, set in a alternative Victorian era. David Baumgart, Starfarer's graphic artist, is actually art director at Gaslamp Games, so it seems he works on both games parallel. I'm quite exited for this game, could really rekindle my love for constructive strategy. I just hope David still finds enough time to draw up some more cool spaceships for Starfarer :)

Here are some bullet points from the website:

- Dynamic, city-building, citizen-simulating action. Every imperial subject has a purpose and agenda of their own, and their interactions are rich, exciting, and often lethal!

- New “procedural extrusion” technology lets you design your colony the way you want! Buildings are procedurally generated and extruded directly from the aether to your specifications!

- Tame the uncharted continents by land, sea, and air! Set forth in mighty Zeppelins to do battle with Sky Pirates, or take to the seas in search of fortune and probably sea serpents!

- Losing is still fun! When your colony fails miserably, earn medals, promotions, and titles as befits a true politician and scion of the Empire!

Ok then, it seems you have answer to anything. Give me LOTO combination (2.300.000e  for this week), pick 7 numbers from 1 to 39 :)

Sorry for off

This game does look awesome :) But we will see how it turns out :)

I'll admit, I'm excited about this one.

I love the character that Dungeons of Dredmor has - I can't really believe it works at all - let alone working so well - with such ... madness? variety? chaos? but I am looking forward to a similar stamp on this game.

Here's hoping it turns out beautifully ...

It's not easy to imagine the finished product, it has not just one great new idea but so many of it! Well, new for this genre at least.

- You can design the buildings you place yourself, and the design is closely related to the function (not like in Spore)
- It seems there will be logic networks in the game, something like Minecraft's redstone or SpaceChem. But with cogs and pipes and Tesla coils!
- Settlers with distinctive personalities and backgrounds that a controlled (more or less) via objectives, not orders.
- Losing as part of the fun... in a strategy game
- Crazy steampunk scenario

Ok, I have actually no idea how many of those things dwarf fortress did. I wanted to get into that for ages, but it's just so damn ugly. So I'm double happy that the term "Dwarf Fortress for everybody" was mentioned.

Off-Topic: Gothars, did you try playing Dwarf Fortress with a texture pack and Dwarf Therapist? I found those two things made it considerably more playable (In fact, I can't play without them, they're that useful to me)

Back on-topic: Looks pretty interesting, especially liking the steampunk setting. Not enough games of that "period" for lack of a better phrase, good to see one in production

OT: could you point me to a TP screenshot? Googling yields very... inconsistent results.

The setting is really interesting, in the interview there's some more about it. It seems they dug out all kinds of crazy inventions and scientific theories from the 19th century and build a world in which those really exist and work. For example the aether theory. Or the fact that Edison is irrelevant and electricity is based on Teslas work, power is conducted via coils instead of cables. And it seems about every superstition that was popular at that time is real ;D

Gaslamp is his company if you didn't know

Uh, like in he owns the company? Na, you probably didn't mean that.

This one is what I use, some screenies of what it looks like in the thread.

In regards to the game itself, what kind of massive structure things can you make? Since having implausibly massive buildings is always a fun thing to do

He's one of three co-founders. That's what I meant...  :)
