Ok Im a new AS/College student what will I need?
« on: September 20, 2012, 07:02:37 AM »

I have been on this forum for a little while now, and as I have just started my AS/College Computer Science Cources I want to know what kind of software I need to program Mods and draw PROPERLY for Starfarer.

Q1
What language is used?(I think its either PYTHON or JAVA)
Q2
What will I need to compile/write this language?
Q3
I already know how to sprite, but what is the best deal for Adobe CS6/other programs?
Q4
Don't get *** off at me for posting this in this section...
Q5
Are there any versions of the software I can use on mac (NO ARGUMENTS OVER WHICH IS BETTER)?

Thanks in advance and kudos to you and the Mighty Alex.

1 & 2: Starfarer scripts are written in Java. Most data files are a JSON variant, and the files are kept track of in CSV spreadsheets. You can edit all of these with a simple text editor. Scripts are compiled by Starfarer itself, so don't worry about that.

However, for Java code, you might want to look into using an IDE, as it makes things much easier. The forums include tutorials for setting up Eclipse and Netbeans (both have Mac versions, but some things might work differently).

I can't help with 3, not an art person. Sorry. :)

I heared someone saying art person!

I recomment paint.net which i'm using atm.
PS is a better tool for creating art of any kind,
but there are two things about it which prevent me from using it.
- it costs lots of money, paint.net is free
- it is a lot harder to master
with paint.net you got all tools needed to create sprites ,but PS got more
which makes it a better tool as long as you know how to use it.

Its just my view on spriting.
all spriters got different ways of spriting and so they like different programs.
