I just hope Nexus 2 will really happen. As it seems they were planning a Kickstarter campaign this summer that never happened.

The game was completed 8 years ago and we get a free expansion every year.

Arranging holidays in an embrace with the Starsector is priceless.

they actually did campaign on gamesplant(not sure about the name though) in May i think but they didnt reach their target...
they also said they have other possibilities for funding so....
i cant wait though...too bad they didnt include freedom of movement in the first game but from what ive heard its all there locked in the code and never activated.... :-\

Homeworld has now been remastered and released on steam! :D so that can be updated.

Also Nexus 2 never seemed to materialise after the failed kickstarter which is very, very sad.

Can't believe we forgot Sword of the Stars!

A light 4X that has a strong emphasis on tactical combat (executed in a similar fashion to Homeworld)
I suppose it can be thought of as Total War in Space.

Just make sure you play Sword of the Stars (SOTS), NOT its abomination of a sequel; Sword of the Stars 2.

SOTS + all its expansions is currently available for $2.49 @ indiegala.

:edit:

FYI
I'm honestly not a huge fan of what the SOTS expansions did to the base game.
Although the new races that were added are great, along with them they introduced a lot of new micro-intensive mechanics to the 4X part of the game.
This diluted the fun of the tactical combat, made the game more complex to learn, and more laborious to play. Definitely a case of bad complexity, rather than good.

So I'd strongly suggest anyone new the franchise starts with vanilla SOTS.

SOTS isn't tactical, it's more strategic. Outbuilding the opponents makes more difference than maneuvering.
