missiles and phase ships
« on: August 12, 2012, 10:42:32 AM »

Right now it takes 2 pilum launchers to completely lock out phase cruiser out of combat. While small phase frigates have little hull cross-section and can quickly phase, wait until missile passes over hull and unphase - cruiser is totally wasted with 20 seconds total phase time and 3-4 seconds while pilum missile flies over hull. Right now phase cruiser can rely only on PD to negate missiles - if you will use phase cloak you will get overloaded in no time. Maybe while ship is phased missiles must not home on it and just continue on previous heading? Missiles just too good vs doom phased cruiser which costs 20 fleet points :]

Pilae aren't much of a problem for the doom class. Its armour and hull are impressive as is it's pd compliment. the way I run it is with 4 burst lasers and even then I can phase, let them pass over me and take them out before they circle around.

The point is - you need 2 shots from default doom PD laser to destroy 1 pilum and missiles is too slow to cross ship hull while it phased. You lose insane amount of flux while phased and missiles slowly fly across phased ship hull. Another idea would be to speed up missile flying across phased ship.

you do have a good point about that
but it isn't a devastating weakness

It would be interesting if the missiles couldn't track the ships while they were phased. Like they don't have good enough sensors or something.

That is how I thought Phase ships were implemented at first. That they would disappear from sensors while phased out, leaving only strange collections of purple coils floating across the battlefield.

How's about just having weapons that are phase-specific?  That would serve the "submarine" mechanical idea even better.

Perhaps the ability to still fire missiles while phased out?

Science no. Would really mess with the balance. I think it was disguised somewhere else as well, and was turned down.
