How does that shadowing effect and damage effect work?
It's an overlay. Have a look through the starfarer folders and files

Hm, that's where I'm conflicted. I think starlight can be done by replicating photoshop's overlay blend mode. Overlaying a black and white gradient then blending it in, like so:

That, looks dang awful. If that was used in the game, I would most likely stop playing.

The shadowing is just a single shadow sprite overlaid on top of the scaled-down ship sprite and clipped to it. The damage effect... more of the same, but considerably more involved.

Hm, that's where I'm conflicted. I think starlight can be done by replicating photoshop's overlay blend mode. Overlaying a black and white gradient then blending it in, like so:

Well, if you pick just about the roundest ship in the game, and run the gradient across the axis where it happens to look most natural...  ::)

Remember that in space, light comes from all sides, from all the stars and other things? How do you suppose to replicate that, without causing alot of lag?
