Starfarer performance
« on: September 02, 2011, 10:37:24 PM »

What sort of performance are you getting, and how playable is it across those systems?

For all intents & purposes, 60 fps should be considered the max, as its a programmed limit.

Computers I have tried it on:

AMD Phenom II x6 1090T OC @ 3.94Ghz (more recently at 4.05Ghz) w/ stock evga 460 2win (2x 460 in SLi on a single card) - windows 7, 95%+ idle, 60fps(1080p) (This is my workstation I use for 3d modelling & rendering; I also tend to play my more graphic & cpu intensive games on here too - it auto UC's to 900mhz when cpus are under low load): Overkill. Pure and simple. Even the most ludicrously epic battles are playable, with gratuitous amounts of ships.

i5 2410m (2 cores, 4 threads) @ 2.3Ghz w/ integrated intel HD3000 - windows 7, 60-30% idle, at least ~60fps (have not tried intense battles - this is a laptop I recently got as a gift) (1366x768): Definitly playable, though it has limited headroom for background multitasking. I need to test heavy battles later.

AMD Turion x2 @ 2.1Ghz w/ unknown nvidia mobile graphics - windows vista, 5-30% idle, ~15-45fps (depending on intensity of battle) (1600x900?): Playable in missions like 'turning the tables', but large battles like 'holding the line' are truly painful

celeron 743 @ 1.3Ghz w/ integrated intel express 4 - windows 7, 1-5% idle, ~8fps (1366x768): Nigh unplayable. Even the menus lag. Max framerate is ~13fps when starting a battle with one ship, engines not thrusting.

For reference, they are listed here in the following benchmark:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiqfhgzyU7crdHVHZ3lsY1R4eElhY0FheXJnNExPaFE&hl=en_US#gid=0 <-- chart
http://www.neurohack.com/transcendence/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4332 <-- benchmark

Interestingly, all but the turion (Which I have not yet tested) have managed to get above-average passmark scores for their cpu's
(1090T scoring over 8000 on an unstable OC (over 2000 above avg: ~+33% increase), i5 scoring 3500 or something (it was 200 above avg:~+6% increase), celeron scoring 514 (only one I remember exactly) (~100-200 above avg ~+25-60% increase)

Intel Pentium M 1.6GHz (you're going to love this: it's underclocked so it doesn't burn out)
Intel 852GM Chipset integrated graphics (64MB, no pixel shading, etc.)
1GB RAM
Windows XP SP3
1024×768px

Playing through Turning the Tables, I found that the framerate was twentysomething when just flying around, then when the battle started, it dipped down to about 15–18 on average. Overall pretty consistent, and it didn't go beyond 10 or 30. I find missions like Predator or Prey a bit tedious; flying a lumbering juggernaut through a giant nebula is rather slow at the best of times. I must give credit though – while the framerate naturally reflects my computer's capabilities, the game is nevertheless very stable and I've never come across any graphical problems.

I have one of those 1.6ghz pentium m's - it did in fact burn out >.> (and arguably, quite literally, judging by some burn marks on the case where it touched the heatsink. The CPU itself did not combust, but the die was covered in strange patterns of light refraction, likely a result of damage due to thermal stress; amazingly, the computer would actually POST, though it would bluescreen soon after as it attempted to load up windows.)

Oh, wow - I'm surprised it actually runs with 64MB video memory - the textures alone clock in at almost 60MB, and then there's other stuff.

The game is very unlikely to be CPU-limited - how fast it runs is going to be mostly determined by the graphics card.

Thanks for sharing the info, guys.

Well, I think the celeron does have it cpu-limited simply because it is so slow regardless of it being absurdly fast compared to others of its make. Never did check it in taskmanager though, which I should do some time...

I'm getting 60fps and 93% idle on the start screen.  Fullscreen, 1680 x 1050 /w sound.  Game loads in a little over 2 seconds.  Nothing in the game slows me down, even when FRAPSing.

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K (overclocked to 4.4GHz (I could OC higher but i CBA) -- gets 9000 on PassMark)
GFX: 2x (SLi) EVGA GeForce GTX 460 1GB (both overclocked to 800MHz core and 1.9GHz memory)
OS: Windows 7 Professional
MEM: 8GB G.Skill DDR3 1600MHz RAM
HDD: 64GB Crucial M4 SSD (Starfarer is installed on this one, and it's my boot drive -- gets 1800 on PassMark)

My system overall gets P33000 on 3DMark Vantage.  Overkill for Starfarer, obviously.

Damn you! *shakes fist*

Coincidentally, I'm looking at building a computer with nearly identical specs to yours, but with one graphics card. Can't wait...

update on the i5 2410m: it can get down to 43fps, though this is only when there are a lot of engines or ships on screen, so its definitly a graphics-limited case.

[edit 2] - got it down to 15 fps with a whole lot going on in the screen. Still, overall, it gives generally superior performance to the other two laptops.

On my Phenom II 980 Black/ 2x Radeon 6870 / SSHD rig of doom it runs perfectly in fullscreen mode  ;D.

In windowed, it runs poorly.  Lots of stops and stutters.  It will run smooth as butter for a second or two, then stutter away.  Very odd.

Well, that is in all likelyood a software issue. Not sure why that is happening. I don't usually play in windowed except when screen-capping, but I've never experienced anything like that before

I hope to give starfarer a spin on a win8 dev computer running a low end mobile class cpu (in this case an AMD E350) tomorrow

OH, so sorry for taking so long to get back to you guys about that.

Anyways, the results of said test (aside from the harmless but irritating glitch with the launcher/key-activation screen) are very good! The E-350's superior (in comparison to say, an Atom, or even Atom/ION setup) graphics capabilities & Windows 8's optimizations to its overhead provide for a playable, and better yet, enjoyable, experience which never dropped below 45 fps (and in fact stayed at 60 under most tested conditions).

I'm using:

Amd Athlonx2 64 6000 ~3.0ghz
geforce 9800gt (1gig)
4g ram, 64bit Vista Home Basic (don't hate)

I'm running the game at 1680x1050, monitor's native resolution, and I haven't had the game drop below 60 fps that I'm aware of.  Certainly haven't noticed any slowdowns in combat.

Running it on pretty much the same machine (the OS is the same to the bit :D) Although I got GeForce 260 and the CPU is Intel Pentium 3,3 GHz DualCore. Haven't had any drops in FPS that I'm aware of... but I'm thinking of getting a new PC, final version of Starfarer MUST RUN SMOOTH! :D

Just kidding, but I might need a new one for Mass Effect 3 or Diablo 3, this boy's almost 4 years old afterall!
