Give starliner a penalty free converted hanger
« on: May 02, 2025, 09:05:24 PM »

According to its graphic and description, it has a small craft bay already. All it needs is a facility for fighter bay, wgich should be easier to convert, than a ship with no prebuilt smallcraft facility. Or at very least reduce its penalty.

Hmm, by your suggestion the Tarsus freighter can also have a similar effect.

Practically it does almost thing at all except in certain niche situations, cause you won't be bringing a Starliner into combat as a makeshift carrier (Buffalo Mk.II / Buffalo freighter does a way better job for example).

The only situation I can think if is either your are doing a retreat action, or you are bringing in one as a flagship in some kind of weird Support Doctrine build.

Yeah but Tarsus did not confirm it has a bay in the description, even though it looks like it having one.

If it keeps the penalty, give it two bays instead of one so it can imitate the pirate Colossus 3.

Yeah but Tarsus did not confirm it has a bay in the description, even though it looks like it having one.

Well the description of Converted Hanger is that it converts the standard shuttle bay to serve as also a Fighter bay, which all ships possess considering that you can take shuttles down to planets regardless of the size of ship(s) in your fleet, which more or less confirms that frigates have a shuttle bay but is presumably not big enough to support the other things needed for a Converted Hanger.

Also the Starliner description for its landing / launch bay is that it's small & for exclusive use for executive-class passengers, so in reality it could much smaller than the standard shuttle bay used as a Converted Hanger. Personally to me it sounds like the equivalent of a helicopter landing pad on a big expensive yacht.

I do think it's fine that the Tarsus doesn't gets a fancy enhancement considering that it's 3 DP, and I think Megas' suggestion is pretty good.

For Tarsus, that'd just be the option to permanently convert it into a Condor; because that's what Condors are, converted Tarsus freighters.

Giving Starliner Vast Hangar should actually make it pretty interesting outside of transporting crew. Because if you compare other transports to tankers, tankers usually get better mounts to protect themselves when needed. If Nebula and Starliner would potentially work as erzatz carriers, this would make them pretty cool. In fact Roider Union already has two carriers based on Nebula for exactly that reason - sector is dangerous and spacers will militarize every ship they could get their hands on to get by.

well I was not expecting vast hanger, the original proposal just wanted a penalty free hanger for fun. But if it actually get vast hanger, it would be a viable combat ship.

Comparing that to the Heron...

Huh. Half price for about half the ship. Two hangers versus three and a useful ship system, lower speed, lower OP per hanger, no medium mount...

Compared to the Condors I generally don't use, it's slower, slightly tougher, has more OP, again no medium mount, but has the same DP cost. Could carry ECM or Nav Beacons more effectively, counts for Escort Package.

I wouldn't replace my Herons with it, but if I was hauling around a Starliner anyway for the crew capacity, I might be willing to take it into combat. Probably competitive with Condors.

Then again, given the specifics of how post-combat crew recovery work, I might only be willing to do that if I was really sure I could keep it from getting popped. Or had brought spare Starliners.

I don't think it would be broken, anyway.

Personally I have a habit of carrying at least 1 combat capable civilian ship. The idea is to allow combat loss replacement without draining the 240DP limit for combat skills. Vast hanger starliner would be one of those.

I feel like the king of support civ ships is the prometheus. Lots of guns to play with and good OP. But yeah starliner blows Atlas out of the water.

Just my dumb idea, but I kinda see it having a Thunder Heavy Interceptor Wing built into it. It makes sense that a 'luxury' cruise liner might have some fancy pirate protection, and they're both midline... /shrug
