EDIT2 Solved! Need to disable GL threaded optimization,, i.e.

Sorry if I am necroing the thread and should have made a new post instead. I have been having enormous amounts of trouble getting the game to work on CachyOS (also Arch-based). Installation worked fine, the launcher pops up, but when I try to start the game everything just freezes and I can't really even terminate the game (at least on the desktop side). I am forced to restart the computer. I've tried this only twice, but it was the same thing both times. Do you think that disabling GL threaded optimization will fix it for me? I had a feeling it had something to either do with Nvidia drivers or Java.

Yeah, the computer freezing sounds like some kind of graphics driver or OS issue, so the threaded optimization setting might help. Also worth trying, I think, is editing data/config/settings.json, looking for legacyLauncher, and setting that to true - it'll stop the launcher from using OpenGL, which may let the game start normally in your case, since it sounds like it could be a problem related to initializing an OpenGL window twice - once for the launcher, and once for the game proper.
