i am using heavy maulers so that the ship killer side has a lot of oomph to it. for the shields i use 4x sabot pods with Ext. missile racks.
after that, i would go with:
heavy needlers. they are extremely good at overloading shields since the AI underestimates how much it is going to do. switch sabots to pilum or harpoon pods.
heavy autocannons. need the extended mag for this one IMO, ammo isn't all that suited for long engagements. switch missiles to pilums or harpoon pods.
Thumpers. not the greatest vs armor or shields, but they got a high per shot value and a good RoF to counter this. missiles are Sabot Pods.
HVDs barely dent the shields of larger ships? Man, I took down a Dominator ALONE with my epic enforcer (x2 HVDs, x1 heavy mauler, etc.) I usually put a heavy mauler and a HVD in each slot.
that doesn't mean anything really. i can take one down using a lasher and light mortars, that doesn't mean light mortars are shield busting game breakers that need the nerf hammer.
