Hi!

This is an awesome game already, very promising.  I have to admit I'm more of a strategy fan than an action fan, and the player's inability to have a huge influence over the specific actions of the fleet makes it frustrating at times for me.

Enter the ideal solution: if you plan on adding multiplayer of any kind, add the ability for a friend to join your game (via lan or net), and pilot allied ships!    One of my favorite updates to one of my favorite games was X-Wing Alliance.  X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter was a near perfect flight sim engine, but it needed the ability to play co-op with friends to bring the game to the next level.

Thoughts?

There are currently no plans for any multiplayer of any kind in this implementation of starfarer: Alex has stated that he would rather work on perfecting the single player experience vs. adding on multiplayer and having to split time between both.

However, I think you will like the RPG/Open-world layer which can include a strategic level to it, beyond the tactical battle level which currently is implemented in missions. This is coming down the line, however there are essential parts to the engine that need to be created first. Such prerequisites include the refit screen, due out in the finalized .35a release.

I think this is wise.  Splitting attention between multiple goals is the main reason good concepts for games never come to fruition.  I applaud this decision.

I'm looking forward to this refit screen you're talking about!

Hi Vic,

What Avan said is spot on, but I want to add the following:

We are trying to cater to multiple play styles in SF. One of the things specifically is allowing multiple types of play to be fun. One is the hotshot pilot type player, who would prefer more twitchy gameplay, never gets hit, etc., the other is the armchair admiral, who gets to be a real admiral in Starfarer, and maybe even win just from the Command and Control (previously known as war room) screen.

And everything in between those two extremes. However, the elements of the game that will allow you to do these things are still coming -> refit screen -> system screen -> sector screen (names will most likely change). These elements will let you be more strategic in picking the types of engagements your fleet would participate in.

The missions as they are now are in my opinion quite challenging to the uninitiated player. In the final version of the game, this steep learning curve will be addressed by the campaign itself.

I hope you stick around and see what transpires. I know I can't wait ;D

I cannot describe how glad I am to hear this, i've been getting rather tired of games that seem like they are going to have an amazing single player experience that then turn out to be nothing but effectively a tutorial to play multiplayer.
