So what if we just increased the battle size?

For example, from 240 DP max to 300 DP max.

This came to me in a dream as I was writing the post that carriers' ability to project over friendly ships doesn't really matter since you can just take larger ships, which cost more DP, which means you concentrate a lot more DP in about same area. As an extreme example, four Paragons is full 240 DP, and they don't take all that much more space than four Eagles worth 80 DP.

Increasing the battle size and having "more DP than ships" would really allow for another layer behind your(or the enemy's) battle line.

I understand that the typical argument against this is performance, but given that the current system requirements are "A CPU made in past decade and 512MB of VRAM" I think there's some breathing room in that regard...

The in-game settings max used to be 500, 60% is 300.  It was fine then, and it should be fine now.  It was not the default, but that is okay.  Relatively recently, the max was chopped down to 400 (or 240 DP), while the minimums were left alone (200 max is useful for solo flagship runs).  I miss the 500 map max.

If map size really needs to be fixed, then fix it at 400 and remove its setting from the in-game settings so it cannot be lowered or raised short of diving into the settings.json.  Otherwise, if the in-game settings stay, bring back the 500 max.

Actually, the maximum battlesize isn't limited because of performance (that's what the smaller battlesizes are for), but because this simply is the intended battlesize. Alex reduced it from 500 to 400 because now both sides can get full 60% of battlesize at the same time, or 480 in total.

I don't think an increase of 60 DP, as in the original post, would make a major difference. I usually play with virtually uncapped battle size though (max DP set to the thousands in config), and also use the Fleet Size by DP mod. Oh, and Himemiko's Java mod, otherwise the increased ship amounts will tank your fps.

The gradual deployment for your own ships and the enemy reinforcing in equal amounts to destroyed ships (causing a slow trickle of new ships, especially prevalent in larger multifleet battles) do not vibe for me. The rigidity of the player-side deployment and disorganized way of the AI's deployment also does not endear this system to me. If I have scavenged together a semi-capable battlefleet, l damn well want to use the entirety of it. Same goes for enemies, if I am outnumbered 4:1 and I did not pick the green "flee anyway" option, it's on me and I want all the enemy ships to spam their weapons, missiles and fighters on me.

Gameplay-wise I enjoy the drawn out battle lines and the increased amount of dakka. Though ordering around your fleet is sometimes a bit stringy due to the low amount of Command Points (relative to the increased amount of ships and the extended length of the battles). Hardened Subsystems is practically a must for any frigate, and SO ships don't cut it in huge fleet engagements, unless I cheese it with tactical retreats, which reset PPT for each separate engagement.

All in all, it's personal preference for me, I like it more this way. I'd say give it a go, see what DP limits you prefer.

Instead of increase in in DP i'd rather see increased fleet ships limit.
30 ships cap instead of DP limit feels artificial.

I think a DP cap for fleet makes the most sense.  That way, you can't just spam capitals + fuel tankers to support them until you have 50 onslaughts in reserve, solving every problem with money.  On the other hand, you're not so heavily punished for running SD + DO or lots of non hyperion/scarab type frigates.
