Looking formod suggestions
« on: December 28, 2024, 11:15:40 AM »

Haven't played a campaign in a while, got a fresh install going and some select mods I'll be adding for gameplay changes. Staying away from Nex this time for a more vanilla feel. Now all I have left is to pick some additional faction mods to add in. Not looking for anything crazy, as vanilla friendly as possible. I noticed in the past some of the faction mods just feel like they are revamps of vanilla factions and I didn't like that much. Would prefer for them to bring something unique to the playthrough. Thinking about adding 3 or 4 different factions so all suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

i never played it, but I think hivers maybe?
Having cryptids lurk beyond the sector's line of sight makes some sense. Though I wish there were really weak. Like not as weak as Derelicts, but weak as Persean League. And when I played it, they seemed amazingly strong.

I should generally replay that mod, it looks fun.
Weird that I would recommend it to you...

But I feel like you might've already played it and it doesn't count towards vanilla-friendly ones... Mayhaps?

I think I tried the hivers once before as well. It was certainly unique but essentially fulfilled the same role as the remnants out there just a different type of combat. One of the mods I use is adjusted sector, so running out of exploration/remnant content generally isn't an issue.

if you want to try a vanilla-friendly experience, you could try my vanilla overhaul (you can see it as a link below every post I made). I basically reworked the balance of the whole game. And changed a few things. No one has played it basically. But if you enjoyed, it'd be nice

It doesnt add any new factions though. Nor systems.
Though I am working a system overhaul atm

For mods that are vanilla-adjacent, I would recommend: Interstellar Imperium, Underworld, Ship/Weapon Pack, Outer Rim Alliance, Secrets of the Frontier, and Scalartech Solutions. (Some of these do require some minor tinkering to get them to run on the most recent version of Starsector, but it shouldn't be much more than update the required version and check the end of their threads to see if anyone's done a repackaged jar or anything.)

I will also recommend The Knights of Ludd; it has player-acquirable boss-ships that are very much not vanilla-grade, but it's got some very interesting takes on actually-vanilla-balanced low-tech ships, and is just generally really well done.

It's also possible to run Nexerelin in pseudo-vanilla mode, turning off AI faction conquests & colonization fleets; this is actually what I tend to do, as I like its improved start features & Prism Freeport & remnant-related mission chain.

And, last but certainly not least, I'll also recommend RATS (Random Assortment of Things), which is probably the farthest of these off of vanilla balance, but also really neat.

Interesting I did not know you could disable the AI faction conquest in Nex. I'll have to look into it, because I agree its other features are very nice.

Check out lunalib. It's a utility mod that enables other mods to create a gui for mod settings in game. Nex uses it so you can easily turn off or configure a bunch of stuff without sifting through the settings file.

Thanks, I think I have that installed. Though I just ended up googling how to do it and altered the necessary settings.

Note that if you have lunalib installed, its settings will override those specified in config files (for settings that exist in both config files and can be configured via lunalib).

I feel like Volkov Industrial Conglomerate are pretty unique as a faction. They have their own lore you can read through a hologram in any bar they own, and their ships and weapons are both functionally unique compared to vanilla.

The United Aurora Federation might also be worth looking into. The ships aren't functionally unique and have system abilities similar to vanilla, but they are aesthetically different and their weapons are pretty colorful. They have their own lore, colony items, and a special shop that accepts their own currency you can get by selling your survey data through it. They also have a story questline, but it's still WIP. You can enlist a few officers through certain interactions too.

Finally, even though they're not a faction, I still recommend ED Shipyards. Their ships are the most unique in terms of system ability as well as fighter functionality. You've got a capitol that projects a massive shield allies can hide inside, ships of various sizes that can rescue allies by swapping places with them and gaining huge defensive buffs, a broadside capitol that lowers shields and deploys a withering barrage of explosive shells, and two absolute annoyances that create clones of itself to harass point defense as well as swap places with them on a whim. The fighters are especially creative, with rescue drones that swap places with larger ships, healing drones that repair allies, resupply drones that restore ammo on weapons that use it, and combat fighters that utilize phase. Like I said, they're not a faction, but the Independent vanilla faction should utilize these ships at the very least, or you can smash ED merchant fleets.
