We don't know, and if/when Starsector gets a Steam release, it will be largely up to Valve if any extra keys are granted to distribute to people who purchased the game earlier outside of their platform.
You can check out steamworks documentation on keys to get a general idea of how these things are handled.

Alex decides to keep the game out of Steam in order to focus on the development and avoid unnecessary attention/distraction. The game in current state is very worthy of the price it asks for IMO. There's a fat chance that when the game is released on Steam if it happens and you could get a key to activate it.

I guess this is kind of a if it ain't broke don't fix it kind of situation

the game is really easy to mod, has tons of versions to be downloaded, a functional forum. And generally a secure future as long as the development team is still alive, considering it has reached a quite large community size for an indie game.

What's really the point? Advertising?
Meh...

Maybe when the game is finished.

If Valve allows it then Alex wants to give everyone who purchased the game from the website a steam code. Don't expect a Steam release before 1.0 at the very least.

This is addressed in the FAQ on the website:
Quote
Will it be on Steam / will I get a Steam key later if I buy it now?

Putting the game on Steam is something I want to look at when the game is more or less “done”. It’s a complicated decision for various reasons – there are upsides and downsides, and it’s not something you can easily try and then back out of.

If the game ends up on Steam, and if Valve still allows developers to generate keys for this purpose, then I’d like to get keys to existing players. However, that’s too many ifs to make a promise, so I would recommend assuming “no Steam key” for any purchasing decision made now.

doesn't the website you buy the key from say you will get a discount on the game when it comes out?

It says that the game currently costs 25% less than it will cost in the complete state.

As I've heard, a person publishing on Steam can request as many keys as they want, they just can't sell them for less than what's being offered on Steam.  Giving them away is just fine.  So, you could just email a steam key to everyone whoever bought the game to begin with, so long as they still have the customer information.

Personally, I wouldn't mind just buying it again on Steam.  Just to fund the game more.

Also critically, it costs nothing to generate keys, and apparently I think you can sell those keys for the same price Steam is doing elsewhere but not be charged the cut Steam takes from their storefront. Thor of PirateSoftware mentioned something about that process. I have no feelings on the matter myself, the team can and should do whatever they want for how to handle their game.

Steam workshop is the whole reason I keep most of games on Steam. Keeping track of all the updates of Starsector's mods is a nightmare.

Steam workshop feels like even worse nightmare to be honest, especially when you want to play on a different version, and at least we have TriOS here.

But Steam is good for customers when it comes to buying a game. While 30% cut is insane, at least people living under sanctions would be able to buy it at all.

I would expect the sales to go up MASSIVELY once this ends up on Steam. Every single friend I know, uses Steam, it's so easy and convenient to buy games there, and it's all in one place. It does suck losing 30% of your price, but the amount of eyes you get by putting your game there covers that in magnitudes.

I'm well aware that devs won't do it before 1.0. But even one version before 1.0 would be a gigantic hit. And then you can have that big celebration on Steam that it hit 1.0.

I remember asking Alex about this years ago.  I think he said something along the lines of since the steam community can be very unforgiving for EA titles, that he wanted to wait until it was all the way finished and then have a stellar release on steam.  Or something to that effect.  I was wondering, since so many people don't know about this game.  There are so many people out there missing out on the joys of Starsector.  It seems like he's getting close to finishing though.  But who knows

For people that like to play on steam though, you can always add non steam games to your steam library and launch it from there if you wanted.
