Restart/Retry Button for Battles

Suggestion is a Retry button in the menu that opens during battles if you press Esc. (view attachment)

Currently, any not decisive battle forces the player to manually save before it and then reload, if he loses or takes unacceptable damage to the fleet.

Problems:
- both of those actions (saving and loading) break the game flow
- if the player forgot to save, you usually lose between 30 and 60 min of play time
- incentivizes fighting only significantly weaker fleets, where AI RNG is unlikely to tip the scales, yet those tend to boring mob up fights
- does incentivize conservative gameplay, which just tends to be less fun than yoloing with a Burn Drive into the enemy and trying risky maneuvers

Maybe should also be able to do emergency refits? I definitely would love a retry button. Some of my most fun fights were ones I had to try a few times.

Yes, mine as well.
Your Hostile Intercept mod is what tends to save me, giving me the ability to save before most fights.

I'm definitely in favor of augmenting or replacing the 'instantly flee for a story point' option with a 'retry as many times as you like for a story point' option. Leads to more interesting gameplay.

Why would someone use a story point to retry an encounter when they can do the same at no cost with good save/load discipline?

I have some ideas but can't sprite worth a damn and the ideas imply really involved stuff which I've no clue how to even tackle.

The instantly fleet button is there because there are differences in fleet power that you cant overcome with skill.

Thats not viable with how punishing defeat is at the moment. Also forces you to play the game really slowly/carefully, which is a lot less fun.

...good save/load discipline?
There is a difference between discipline based mechanic that rewards the player (Ex: changing the weapon load out depending on the faction you are going to fight)
and skillless hassle that breaks game flow. (having to manually save before every fight)

then people would just reload the save tbh...

I think it's a good idea to let people replay their combat. Would encourage more experimental strategy. And help people when dealing with Remnants.

starsector vanilla overhaul, play it while it's hot. Or before 0.98 patch comes out, I guess
