Now see, I WOULD HAVE posted my Atlas MkII build but it's definitely NOT "ineffective" because I probably have more lifetime kills with that ship than most others combined.  Easily the best pirate ship in the game and for those who explore it thoroughly, it punches WAY above its 24 DP weight class.

Quad Gauss Cannon Invictus, with full capacitors.

I thought, with such a large flux capacity, it should be fine to run its flux up as long as it gets to vent in between Lidar salvos...nope. You get one insanely powerful salvo off and then have so much flux to dissipate that even if you start venting as soon as Lidar Array ends, you still won't be finished venting by the time it comes up again. A solid 20 seconds of standing in place doing nothing.

Does S-mod Resistant Flux Conduits help in this case? The mod already synergy very well with Invictus and this build is too glorious to be left on the shelf.

Full lidar array barrage of 4 guass cannons is 36000 total flux (600x3 per second per guass for 5 seconds) plus 10% if you smod armored weapon mounts. Invictus max flux dissipation is 1k with full vents, so 2k while active venting. RFC is additive with the active venting bonus so now it's 2350 (with smod). If you active vent as soon as the volley is over, you can finish venting at 15s. Without smod, it's 16s. You can get this number down to 9 or 10s with smod flux distributor and relavent skills like flux regulation and ordnance expertise. The lidar array will be done recharging shortly before you finish venting in any case because, despite it having a 20 second cooldown, its cooldown ticks down during activation and has a charge up of 3s so it has an effective cooldown of about 12s.
With smod armored weapon mounts, smod resistant flux coils, 4x guass cannon, 2 hurricanes, 4 devastators, 2 mark IX, 55 vents, and 19 caps,  as well as ordnance expertise (doesn't even need elite) and flux regulation, you have just enough dissipation and capacity to do a full barrage as soon as lidar array is ready every time, assuming you vent afterwards and none of the other weapons fire in between. With a 7/5/3 build, this thing can two volley the sim onslaught.

Good math!

I think I was having problems because I had Systems Expertise, so I couldn't seem to get enough dissipation even with Resistant Flux Conduits. I also had difficulty fitting in full vents while having Converted Hangar + fighters assigned, it's too much OP unless you start leaving slots empty.

...Granted, that may actually be the way to go for an "all guns forward" Invictus build. It would be extremely stupid since you'd be removing its ability to act as fleet anchor to turn it into a one-trick-pony, but as they say, specialization is the fruit of ingenuity. I may have to try it again in my next playthrough.

Quad gauss Invictus stacks got thoroughly optimized for Ordo farming by CapnHector. Those builds might be worth looking through, though they're built for a very specific purpose and don't work as well alone.

well, depending on how we define 'hilarious' (for me, or for you?):
Ragnarok class sporeship (has a base 100k hp) with hull and armor boosts, every hull and armor boost, and associated regen, thing you can find (I think I have a few mods that add some), loaded with exotech dawn superfighters and mark IV cannons from HMI

I can last past peak performance time, outlasting absurd amounts of enemies.
I have survived to the point that many enemy ships will just retreat from low CR.
I have made enemies look like disco balls from the 14 (+2 from specific upgrades) fighters with lasers.
I have rammed enemies, instantly overloading even most capital ship shields, and lesser ships get killed outright.

...and anything fast enough, and smart enough, will just dance around me until they give up and leave from low CR, typically leaving at full hp.
Picture them with an exasperated look on their face.

It wasn't ineffective when I first had it, though last time I tried this it seemed WAAAAY less powerful then my first run with it so I think something or other got nerfed and have no way to know what.

The Drift King

I took the Kassadari Onslaught from Tahlan Shipworks, gave it Forced Overdrive, which disables shields in return for a minor time dilation at all times, put a Penance Engine from Exotica Technologies on it (which disables shields but gives scaling armor regen based on how many enemies you're near), gave it lightweight armor that took away some of it's armor but gave it SPEED and made one of the slowest ships into a stupidly quick ram with guns

The first run I had it in as my flagship was GLORIOUS, and was actually one of the very few ships I was willing to pilot myself.
Targetting threats to the battleline and just RAMMING them out of position was far more effective then it probably should have been
Piloted right this thing could solo most vanilla level fleets, and only really got into trouble doing the Daemon bounties from Tahlan
I ended up with four of them in that playthrough, and just watching them zip and crash their way through fleets was my absolute favorite starsector combat memory.

Champion with Paladin PD, IR autolances, and burst PD. In the large missile slot, squalls. Think I also put expanded magazines on there, with ITU.
It is actually a pretty funny counter to DEM spam in the early game, and I always go for it to counter the PL blockade. However, it's pretty awful outside of that and it dies really quickly.

It's a very cost-effective artillery platform, as long as you make sure nothing gets close to it, because if anything sneezes on it, it will die.

Revenant/Doom Improvised Stealth Carrier Fleet. Quiet but... not actually deadly. Was fun to implement, tho

Dipping into mod territory, I took an executor and used Suo Wang pulsers (from HMI - burst pulse laser with good efficiency but low damage per hit and low sustained output) in the medium energy slots with autopulse lasers in the larges. As long as it had escorts it actually did fine just bursting down shields, but it had no real anti-armor capability on its own.

Another weird design was using the Aegis flak guns from SWP (large mount flak PD) as the main guns of a ship. It may be frag damage, but it's 1000 dps and 0.25 efficiency, so it would clear the skies quick and start chipping away at enemy ships. And anything that overloaded and had a hole in the armor died super-fast.

I suppose both of those aren't really 'ineffective' so much as hyper-specialized. Given the right circumstances, they could do some work.

I completely forgot about it, but: SO Heavy Armor Doom. Surprisingly less prone to death than it sounds, Doom already has good armor to begin with.

Enforcer with 5heavy maulers.
The sound they make if you have 10+ of them as escorts is pure asmr.
