I think this would require different mounts, or different layouts. When you have the combination of L energy with M ballistics, it makes too much sense to use ballistics for shield-breaking and using L energy for anti-armor.
That is a good point. Executor has a bunch of medium ballistics for taking down shields, and HILs are just the best option for shield-cracking. Still:
- Paladins really need turrets to be attractive... Executor has hardpoints
- APL is a flux-manageable anti-shield weapon. I guess you could use APLs+Maulers+Hurricanes, but HIL+HVD+Squall just seems like a better combo.
- Don't know what Gigacannon does
- Paladins: I always assumed that was some kind of oversight. The description implies that they can turn hardpoints into turret mounts, and they'd be so much more viable if they could.
- APL: It's not strictly anti-shield, and can be surprisingly deadly in bursts. With more range, I think it could be okay, in conjunction with advanced turret gyros (which could be taken without advanced optics)
- Gigacannon: IIRC CapnHector has a video of him using it successfully, with clever repurposing of the forward medium mounts to host pulse lasers. With extra range, still probably not the best loadout, but a lot more forgiving to players who aren't him.
