Allow the Gate Hauler to redeploy gates
« on: May 16, 2024, 10:29:39 AM »

Currently it can be used exactly one time. ... Yay!

As the AI does not use gates anyway, even though their activation has been in the game for several versions, let us use the thing to move around already-deployed gates as well. There are always some in locations where they are absolutely useless.

... Factions should probably be upset, if you steal their gates, useless or not. Bonus points, if they get even more upset after 'At the Gates', once everyone knows that the gates can be reactivated right now.

Maybe lock the option in claimed systems behind owning a High Command (and thence presumably being able to defend the thing while it does its thing).

Once the campaign progresses to the point where AI fleets also use gates, this could be the starting point for additional emergent events, namely factions trying to capture the Gate Hauler and, if successful, stealing gates for themselves, or staging system raids targeting not (only) planets but also gates, with Gate Hauler and escort fleet in tow and hostile reaction force rallying on the opposing side in a "king of the hill" style scenario.

The Gate Hauler disassembles after deploying the Gate to provide ressources for the new colonists. It's in its lore.

It is also nonsense: A stopgap line to explain why the throwaway mechanic is thrown away.
Just like the "these ships automated without any advanced means are too advanced to be reverse engineered" of the Sentinel fleet.

Stopgap lines are fine TODOs, but we should not be content with them.
(Personally, I'd rather have the literal, raw "TODO" in the text, lest it gets forgotten eventually and gets to live on forever.)

Throwaway mechanics are never sensible in games meant to have a long play time. They firmly belong in the "<1d per run" genres.

I would rather suggest tech mining changed into actual technology research and recovery

Along with a progression tree/prints, and culminating in the very, very endgame ability to construct these gate ships and deploy gates where you want.

This would make planets with ruins extremely valuable and lead to cool stuff, rather than not being able to modify gates and tech mining being totally useless thing taking up a valuable production slot.

I agree with all of the sentiments expressed here. It broke my heart to realize that I wouldn't be able to keep the gate hauler and build my own network. Either way, I don't think being able to shuffle around gates with the hauler is unbalanced.

As Zsar has mentioned before on the thread, It's not a very established part of the lore that could easily be changed if the developers cared to. Besides, in a discussion of game mechanics, the lore, as much as I love it, is not a particularly relevant factor.

imagine the reaction of Hegemony and Tri-Tachyon if they found out someone was stealing their gates... It's okay to have one more gate appear this way. But someone basically playing the Domain, that would could end up with the player being at odds against the entire Sector...

I guess it wouldn't break the lore, it would make it kinda... It would introduce conflict.

SPOILER for Academy Quest
Spoiler
And if you think they wouldn't care... I think during the Academy quest it's revealed that they are actively trying to launch them back up using the research you have. So, that would make them very mad. Very... Very mad.
