Where do you set up camp?
« on: May 16, 2024, 08:39:26 AM »

Do you set up a "home base" in a system in the early game? If so where? Do you move your "base" to your colony system after you set up a colony?

I used Mayasura's free storage as my base before, but now I prefer Corvus's empty space station. Although I like Mayasura's location, Corvus is also central, it has a gate, and the storage is right next to Asharu so you can easily change logistics hullmods or sell excess junk if needed.

Before I play a game for real, I scan the sector with Apogee start to see if there is a colony system I like.  If I do not like the seed, I quit and try another seed.  If I like the seed, I restart the game and play for real, and I know exactly where to build my colonies as soon as I am able.

Early, I use the abandon station as storage in Mayasura because there are no patrols there which means I can travel with transponder off without getting stopped and I can shop at Black Markets with impunity.

Late in the first year, I build my first colony and haul all the junk I saved up to store in my first colony.

Corvus is classic, but it has Hegemony patrols that discourage no transponder travel.

I actually set up my base in Yma, not because of the free storage, but because there's a pirate world that I'm constantly bombing to lower its stability
I'm just waiting for it to decivilize

I don't have Nexeralin

1% fee too high for you?

I keep all my stuff either at Culann, nearest to Core Worlds colony. In the past I used to keep my stuff on Port Tse Franchisa, cause it's more quiet there and it's a smaller system, so it's faster to move around in.

not using any mods

that's kind of a *** move. Tbh. That's probably one of my favourite planets.

womp womp

I just do it cuz it's easier to steal a planet than find a new one
plus it's undefended, close to a Persean League planet that I am commissioned with, and it's close to the core worlds

I am new here, can I ask a question?
Spoiler
Setting up a home base in Starsector early on is crucial. I prefer Corvus for its central location, access to a gate, and nearby storage at Asharu. It's ideal for managing logistics and adapting to early-game challenges effectively. "Let me introduce you to https://ukwritings.com/do-my-assignment ukwritings, my go-to for academic writing. You know, if you want to do it that way, you can skip the manual process and just use Persean Commercial Real Estate. Save a few hours before start and scan for the optimal system automatically.

I have been trying to do different things each run.

But Penelopy's Star is fantastic for an early colony.  Great access to markets, which means more monthly money.  And since it's in the core world, it and it's planet layout are a guaranteed spawn.  The cryovolcanic planet always has great mining, there's always a gas Giant with volatiles, a volcanic with Hot and an a desert planet for food.

But I think the real gem is the low hazard barren planet with it's nearly identical moon in close orbit.  They protect each other with their fleets, allowing you to get heavy industries, fuel and refining off the ground in a very early in a well protected location.

The .97 patch made the system part of the Luddite church, so now it takes a commission from then to build there now.

Trick is to get few million credits before you start your first colony and build military base/ high command ASAP.

Depends. In 0.96, I used Persephone's Star system as base of operation - set up one colony on a world that wouldn't grow naturally, with Refining for passive income. After you pay off Kanta, system was secure. I did move the colony later on once I discovered where I wanted to settle permanently.

In 0.97, you need commisions to set up in core world systems, so abandoned stations are preferable - usually one in Corvus. The whole point of early game colony is the place to store stuff and passive income. Abandoned stations cover the first, and commision covers the second, so I don't create a temporary colony anymore - placing it outside of core worlds is too inconvenient.

I mean...I just start the game and when I feel like finding a colony system I just...you know...explore.

...Is that weird?

That's Old Starsector thinking. These days, military infrastructure is only relevant for its +1/2 stability, and isn't otherwise necessary at all.
