What a fantastic mod that completly changes the way you can play the game. I love the idea of being able to choose to be nomadic instead of bolted to a colony planet somewhere. I really hope this is considered for inclusion into the base game.
My only feedback so far is: The hullmods for production should not just come domain era motherships in my opinion. Ultimately the whole idea of this mod is that it adds another way to play the game. So we should see Independant fleets with 'self production' ships in their fleet and we should be able to loot or buy hullmods everywhere the game normally gives them to players as this is a 'part of life' within the game world. I undersand why the choice was made to make it 'you can get this capability from domain era hunts' as a way to expand end game but i feel this would be so much cooler to allow the player to select this style of gameplay from the begining (or as soon as they can obtain the hullmods, just as you would with logistics mods normally).

right now, such an expansion is past any plans of what I desire to upgrade about this mod. but some things you talked about here are kinda cool. I will consider them at a later date.
as for starting with forge production, you can go into the mod folder, open the 'forge_production_settings.ini' file, and change "enable_feature_unlock_at_start":false to "enable_feature_unlock_at_start":true
I will need to add a in game mod settings to this at some point when I have time. but thats for later.
