I'm having trouble getting the game to run at more than 8 fps. I've updated my drivers, messed with the JSON, and otherwise done anything I can find to try and fix it. I'm so desperate to play, please help

What exact settings have you messed with and in which .json? Could be useful to know what you have already tried so far.
This system requirements guide should have the most common changes necessary to run the game smoothly. Not sure if you are running the base game or modded. If it is the latter, disabling some more resource-intensive mods may be the solution.

Alternatively, if you are a fellow AMD GPU user I would suggest:

• Disabling every graphics enhancement in AMD Adrenalin
• Changing the vsync settings in ...\Starsector\starsector-core\data\config\settings.json to true
  ("vsync":false, ---> "vsync":true,)

I saw somewhere on the forums that I should turn "forceNoVBO" off and I've flipped vsync off and on a couple of times. I've gotten it to run well enough without any mods, but I think I need to allocate more ram per the guide.

What are the details of your computer? Windows/mac/llinux? Graphics card? Etc.

For no-mods play you should not need to tweak anything to get much better than that: 8 fps points strongly to their being a major problem (almost no system of the past 5 years is too weak to run vanilla better than that). My recommendation would be to backup your game folder to somewhere else, redownload, and play without messing with anything. Also check to make sure the game is running on your graphics card, if the system has integrated graphics.

It's windows running on a AMD Radeon Vega 8. Laptop behavior I guess. The game is running flawlessly without any mods now.
