Add official support for larger sector sizes
« on: March 25, 2024, 11:46:51 PM »

Given that the next release will incorporate an updated Java version which should help with framerate issues, would it also be possible to add support for larger sectors (both in terms of map size and number of systems)? I've been using mods to that effect and the default sector size now feels positively tiny, especially with all the great new traversal options we have access to.

This would be a very welcome addition.

Hi! The size of the Sector is what it is mainly for gameplay reasons, not performance. How long it takes to fly around, to explore everything, to find certain things that there are only a few of, and so on. In my mind a larger Sector would not be improvement, though I understand that this is subjective (and reserve the right to change my mind!). Just, wanted to make the general observation that the limiter for sector size is not actually performance, and that I don't want to fall into the trap of "larger sector = better".

(I get your point about the new traversal options, but, as a counter-point: those were made to bring movement/travel closer to what I think works best, and making the Sector larger would just be working against that. But, well, fine-tuning the game like that is one of the things mods are great are for!)

I am all for this. On Normal the Sector feels very small, even on the edges it doesn't feel like you're ever far from the Core. The sense of adventure is affected by this (and you end up finding important things very easily), as well as any sense of isolation from being far from civilization when on the fringes. I've experimented with lower burn speed (both the effective speed of burn levels and burn levels themselves) but even when travelling slower, it still doesn't feel large, there is just not much space for random systems between the fixed core and the limits of the map.

@Alex Thanks for the clarification, I can see how the size issue would depend on personal preference too. Hope you'll at least consider adding the option of a larger sector (there is one for a small sector after all) for those who prefer it at some point. Mods are nice and all but it's a real bummer if they get broken (and maybe never updated) on a new release.

For me the main issue aside from preferring more to explore is that especially once all the traversal tools get unlocked it's completely trivial to get to the edge of the sector and back, takes a lot out of the sense of adventure as the above post put it. As for finding important/rare stuff, if it's critical that something is found then surely there are ways to breadcrumb/guide the player in the right direction like with the survey drones/motherships for example?
