Aggression setting in Doctrine & Blueprints is described as applying to ships without officers. But automated ships in player's fleet, without AI core captains, always default to reckless, regardless of Doctrine & Blueprints config. Is this expected?

I assume so. If AI cores are locked into fearless, I would assume the sub AI core automated piloting is the same way, at least lore wise. In terms of gameplay, I assume it's meant to balance the otherwise somewhat overpowered ships. As far as programming, non captained automated ships need to be fearless for remnant fleets, and as such it makes the code cleaner if this is also true for player fleets.

To get around reckless/fearless AI over aggression, give them waypoint or rally civilian craft orders. The former will give them a tight area to stick to, the latter will make them stay in place.

Last time I played was 0.95a but afaik, no AI cores on a Remnant capital means it isn't operating as Fearless

I have some ideas but can't sprite worth a damn and the ideas imply really involved stuff which I've no clue how to even tackle.

I'm not sure about 0.95, but in 0.97 automated ships default to fearless behavior even without AI core captains.

I was curious about the game design perspective of making all automated ships fearless, and IMO useless and frustrating to command.

As for getting around their aggression, I wrote a mod which allows to configure automated ships personality: AI Tweaks.
