fleet cowardliness/indecisiveness towards Ziggurat
« on: February 14, 2024, 03:36:31 PM »

It seems like player fleet AI likes to bug out in this fight when it comes to fighting the Ziggurat boss ship.

I have a full fleet, with 2 capitals (one a legion XIV carrier, one an Executor), an aurora, a fury, a monitor, a dominator, a medusa, a hyperion, and a scarab. They have an opportunity to come in closer to it do keep it occupied (as in weapons are ready to fire, low flux, engines are ready, and in range with a clear shot on it) but instead they come in one by one, giving the Ziggurat a chance to spam motes and recover it's flux. It took me a few tries to carry the fleet with the executor and it's autopulses due to this.

Thank you for the report! I'm not seeing this, so in all honesty I suspect this is a subjective difference of opinion about how aggressive the AI "should" be in a situation like this. Have you used an Eliminate order or Full Assault? That should make it the maximum amount of aggressive that it can get.

(Generally speaking, by the way, it's almost impossible to even get on the same page about possible AI issues without more details. I understand that it's a lot more work to provide and appreciate you taking the time to make a report, regardless, it's just a lot harder to make heads or tails of it. As it stands, I did a quick test with a high tech fleet with similar types of ships in it against the Ziggurat and didn't see anything untoward.)

I think it has something to do with how ships are calculating what "can" go in to fill the surrounding area. Since some of these ships are pretty big and slow relatively speaking in terms of size categories, since the high tech ships have speed as the thing they do besides a paragon. I used eliminate/full assault and engage but that doesn't seem to affect how well they try to sync up together.

Hmm, when I tried it the faster ships surrounded it (and the smaller ships promptly got killed off), while the slower ships had a bit of trouble keeping up, but nothing looked "off".

Yeah, i think they might be just having trouble keeping up with each other so they don't quite arrive at the same time. It just kinda feels awkward that smaller ships just go head-on and thus waste themselves before they could drive their normal support/gap filler things. Might need to rely more on escort orders during it next time.

Makes sense, yeah. Oftentimes I'll just grab the fast stuff and rally it off to the side somewhere, and then cancel the rally at what feels like the right time. That seems to work pretty well, though I hadn't tried it against the Ziggurat. No matter what you do there, small ships are going to be in some real danger!

At least they make the ziggurat waste motes and time .
