I do think that patrols should ignore transponder violations while there is shooting going on. Maybe have them swoop by your fleet to identify you if they haven't 'positively identified' you yet, and then leave you alone as long as you aren't hostile.

This would also make for more interesting trade gameplay. Ordinarily, pirate activity makes early smuggling between pirate planets dangerous, since they serve as rally points for the raiders. Having it also make smuggling to civilian planets more viable would both add a new danger/opportunity to the game and make frequent raids that lose lots of lives and ships more plausible, since they also serve to disrupt law enforcement activity.

Except I'm not a civilian, I'm a mercenary with a commission and I have helped the regular forces defeat their foe.

Listen, I'll stop discussing the subject, it seems obvious no one but me sees a problem, so that's on me.
Even if you are an informal part of their forces, you have to keep your IFF on all the time. Turning it off is not really a thing, and in a battle they will have standing orders to shoot you down.
