Must have mods suggestions
« on: January 18, 2025, 01:39:42 PM »

Hey all,

I'm new here and I'm having a blast with the base game of Starsector since I bought it.
Now I am looking at the mod index and see all those entries hence my question.

What are some of the mods you would consider must have for a playthrough.
Any suggestion is welcome since I don't really have any idea which are better to start with and which add elements that are better left for those that are more experienced with the game.

Thanks a lot.

That's nothing anyone could possibly answer as "must have" is highly subjective. The best way to go about it is to play the game and then figure out what you think is missing or isn't working the way you'd like and find mods to fix it.

Personally I'd stay away from overhauls/conversions and mods that add tons of new ships or factions until you're familiar with the vanilla game.

If you've had a taste of vanilla and have an overview of what the game offers (some fighting, colony stuff, REDACTED, some basic ship outfitting know-how, etc.) I'd say the world is your oyster.

  • Utility, misc and portrait mods are always nice to have as they usually bring some QoL or fluff improvements without changing much in the original game. I'd freely recommend any in that category that you fancy. Do note that the misc category is all over the place in how much is changed compared to vanilla, eg. Grand Colonies changes a lot compared to Too Much Information, which just makes more stats visible.
  • Faction and content extension mods are a bit all over the place, some fit nicely into vanilla, some don't. The degree is up to your taste. My personal recommendation would be Kazeron Navarchy, Luddic Enhancement, Ship/Weapons Pack for content extension and Adversary, Everybody Loves the Ko Combine, Interstellar Imperium and ScalarTech for new faction mods. Your mileage may vary, so take a look and see if they are for you.
  • Feature overhauls and megamods are tricky, as even compared to new factions they change a lot. I'd recommend Nexerelin and Random Assortment of Things and to take a look at all the rest. I use multiple and even mix and match a few for different playthroughs, but they do really mix things up, so they are very much up to taste I believe.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.
Must have was I suppose the wrong phrase to use in this instance.
Still, thank you for suggesting what direction to go with mods to start with.

Mikohime's performance enhancing mod is a must-have if you wanna do any serious modding.
