Help satisfy my urge to maximize Pilums
« on: December 05, 2023, 09:01:14 PM »

Lately i have been on a mood to build a fleet that floods the entire battlefield with Pilums and the new Pilum catapults look very promising.
But i don't know what would be the ideal ship to use them. The Pegasus at a first glance looks promising with the 4 large missile slots and fast missile racks but i feel that using a pegasus for Pilum saturation is not as good as it sounds at a first glance.
There is also the matter of dealing with PD as it doesn't matter that i flood the screen with them if none of them never reach.
Any suggestions?

Make up your mind, you are either in the mood or you want to use regular missiles.
Trash 5dmod ship with abysmal combat stats but cheap dp can go throw and regen pilums.
They are distraction provided for retreating combat ship, knowing there is a minute worth of pilums to distract enemy movement.

LP Manticores supporting Conquests, maybe?

An XIV Legion with rocket bombers is pretty good for overwhelming PD, too.

Wyvern is 100% correct about the math.

We must construct additional pilums.

LP manticores have a large missile? I didn't knew that shame on me.

Pirate Ventures are a good option, provides great logictics too.

 ;D :D :D ;D

I see what you did there.

I see pilums mostly as a good distraction for PD so my torpedo bombers have a better chance of getting through. A few Broadsword escorts spamming flares does well too.

You need cheap ship with fast missile rack. Venture+Condor Spam seems like the best idea here. If you want to go all in with the spammable missile add salamander on the small missile slot.

The condors fighters (with Browdsword or Thunder) would help you mitigate the mediocre TTK of the pillums barrage. I would advise you to take the fighters boosting skills and to build-in ECCM in your Ventures too.

Pirate Venture with Pilum LRM Catapult is better than the usual Venture with medium Pilums, due to the large LRM having a better ammo regen. 6 for medium vs 20 for large.

Sounds great.
Until you realise that the Venture shoots those Pilums out its backside, and the missiles are so slow they never overtake the ship within any meaningful timespan ... .
Found Squall MLRS to work much better in that mounting.

It's not ideal yeah but they seem to work alright on the testing i did with the ECCM package and salamanders. The extra regen the larger LRM has helps quite a bit on helping the ventures not run dry for too long because of the FSM spam.
I still have to get my hands on some LP manticores to see how they go.

Honestly, Pilums need a little speed boost in the initial phase. I think they should be at least as fast as an average destroyer, so maybe in the 100 range. It's sad that so many ships can just flat outrun them.

Falcon (P).  Four medium missile slots on a reasonably maneuverable cruiser should scratch the itch nicely.  Alternatively, the Atlas mk II has two large missile slots for the new large pilum launchers, with plenty of ballistic slots for various sizes of PD if you wish.

I'm going to just commit Heresy here and say the Pegasus is a decent Pilum thrower if you want a capital ship that just THROWS missiles at a rate that the enemy really hates. Is it META? NO. Is it fun? YES.

Falcon (P): IMHO does not really work out.
The medium launchers reload slower than the large ones, and the st00pid ship always runs in to pew-pew at red ships with its PD guns. So the 4000 range is mostly wasted, and the pilums can't get through shields or armour, but the ship does neither stay back from the front line nor does it fire at backline ships which might be venting and have damaged armour.
Not that the snails missiles would get there in time anyway.

At least the movement behaviour is already fixed in the dev version, but targeting will still be an issue.
If you are fine with issuing targeting orders to your ships often (maybe running command center?), it might work ... somewhat.
