So this was posted before, but a long time ago, and I dunno if you're supposed to just necro old threads here? The FAQ says we should search and see if a suggestion has already been made. Well, it has been. But I think the situation is quite different now and it warrants a new thread.
So, Steam Deck is a thing. I tried setting up a custom control scheme, the editor in the Deck gives you a lot of options, but it was awkward because the overlays don't quite play perfectly with the graphics of Starsector. I just feel like it would be so amazing to be able to play this on my Deck! I love the Deck, it's an amazing piece of hardware, and you can do a lot to make games playable on it. But at least I hit my limit trying to make Sector work on it.
There's also that now in my olden days enjoy playing games on the couch. And mouse+keyboard on couch is awkward. So there's another reason innate controller support would be great.
Now. I of course realize that it would be a lot of work to add controller support to the game. Every piece of UI would have to be adjusted. But I really feel it would be a huge improvement to the game that would massively increase QoL and the chance to enjoy the game while on the go and while on the couch, you wouldn't be constrained to only being able to play on a desktop pc on a desk with m+kb. I think it could even be good for m+kb players because it would give the devs an opportunity to improve the utility and convenience of existing UIs. Doing that thorough UI and controls pass to get the game more in a state for 1.0. And of course it would also mean that it would be a lot easier to make a console port of the game, so that's something to consider as well.
There's definitely ways to have controller support even for a relatively complex game like this. Quick select radials for example. Combination inputs like holding LB and then ABXY or do something like toggling a weapon group.
I just really feel it would be such an amazing thing because I *** love Starsector but it pains me so that I can't play it on my Deck or with a controller.
