The one between Church and Diktat looks lightly hightech retrofitted. I guess "League" sort of makes sense, but the League is fundamentally low-branding due to its political nature. It gets weird because mid-tech is a design philosophy and the Hegemony freely uses mid-tech ships, so League's sole identity over the Independent is having a more cohesive military doctrine? Fighters and missiles galore.

Pirates are a fun example because in vanilla they're made to look crap same as the derelicts. You can tell they're bad ships because the paint's slapped on and peeling off. As a result if you clean up the paint job they suddenly look like elite pirates (modded factions have some *really* annoying elite pirates, Legion Infernalis and the questionably-balanced ones in Low Tech Armada come to mind.)

You glance at a red ship with proper paint and a giant skull and go "oh ***, that's an actual threat" - and if the mod balance pops off right just, it is!

The beauty of it is that if it is done then which ships look like what is fully customizable. For example as is, all ships will only use base skin, except faction ones that would use a special skin in Vanilla. You can make factions different from each other through liveries, or only give them to a subset, some elite fleet, or have everything continue as before but put the League skin on your ships for example.

But in other news Invictus turns out to be a complete bastard. I thought it would be an easy and fun ship but it is incredibly detailed and asymmetrical to boot which is not great for the AI. I am having to render it at a very high resolution and even them I haven't found a way to make it look good. Well, we'll see. Good thing I promised a "glacial pace", and nobody uses thar ship except me.

First of all, thanks alot for your hard work in making this mod.

I really hope you manage to make it a success and hopefully we'll see this introduced into the game down the line in a official capacity. I think Starsector really needs this sort of feauture specially to avoid confusion during battles, being a fan of the LP Brawler myself it's kinda annoying trying to figure out which ones are from my fleet and which one is the enemy's, specially given their ''Alahu Akbar!'' doctrines.

One thing that I'd like to know is about the download website...do I really need to log in into it to be able to download your files? Personnaly I try to avoid doing this because I don't like to have my information spread across a bunch of sites I'm not familiar with when modding my games.

Thanks! Sorry all I got on this huge language model and AI kick and expanded to making tons of other kinds of art and prompts! So I kind of forgot about this stuff. Let me try to finish this at some point though.

In the meantime you may use these sprites any way you like, too. Credit nice but I'm not the sprite police. Re the site, it's not supposed to require a login. Just press "download data package".

This is cool enough that it should be a vanilla thing. I always enjoy customizing how my stuff looks in games; character portraits add enjoyment to the campaign for me, why not paint schemes too?

Very cool project. I think the degree to which the sprites match vanilla could be improved significantly with some relatively minor changes to the process. Grabbing a diffusion version or a LoRA that's adapted for pixel art would give you a huge improvement right off the bat, basically for free.

Additionally, while a little bit more difficult (you still wouldn't need to write any new code), training a LoRA on Starsector ships, potentially including good ones from mods, which would definitely give you enough data, would likely improve results enormously.

The most bespoke approach would be annotating the dataset above (basically, create depthmaps or edge maps of each ship, and highlight the weapon mounts and any other features you can scrape procedurally in red) and then using that to train a ControlNet. I'm familiar with that kind of thing, and I'd be willing to lend a hand in writing and debugging the training and annotation code if you wanted to take a shot at it.
